Cinnamon NOT working

Hi. I have been waiting to test out Linux Mint and all it's goodies for LM 12 (official gnome edition) in my VirtualBox. The experience overall have been pretty disappointing and the user friendly Linux Mint I knew once is now too complex and hard to navigate.

Just a note, I tried to look up for MGSE configuration on my LM 12 (default) but it's not there and I had to use MATE and GNOME 3. How do I get MGSE up on my LM 12 ?

After I installed "cinnamon-desktop" from Linux Mint repository, I logout and selected the "Cinnamon" session to log-in and it brought me to GNOME 3 instead of Cinnamon ?





The above screenshot is the login session screen and the bottom screenshot is the "Cinnamon" session I was given when I clearly selected "Cinnamon" for desktop.

The above screenshots and the "Cinnamon" shown in the Linux Mint blog is completely different.

A note about GNOME 3 desktop, you may notice some shortcuts on the top panel bar. How do I remove those shortcuts ? The shortcuts stack onto each other as shown in the screenshot and looks packed and squeezed. How do I adjust them ? GNOME 2 allows moving and deleting panel shortcuts via right-clicks but GNOME 3 seems not to support such an action. How would I remedy it ?

Essentially, I felt that GNOME 3, MGSE, MATE and CInnamon are too young and buggy but they have great potentials if properly managed.

I never try virtual box, but are you sure if 3d acceleration is enable

When I enabled 3D acceleration on VirtualBox, the entire screen in the VM went blank. Nothing was there except a mouse cursor that could move. My VirtualBox is at version 4.1.8.

What type of your VGA
Some VGA driver not work correctly (yet) with Gnome3 (gnome shell).

I too have a similar problem, in that cinnamon is not working.
I am new to linux mint, having recently migrated from ubuntu.
I have Linux Min 12 installed, and have just installed cinnamon 1.1.3 and cinnamon-session using Synaptic Package Manager.
I Then logged out and selected cinnamon at the login screen but I still get Gnome desktop

Does anyone have a solution to this problem please

Maybe you not install NVIDIA driver in additional driver. Proprietary Nvidia driver must install before you can used 3d acceleration. Linux Mint installed at first time not including proprietary driver .

I'm having the same problem with LM12 under VirtualBox 4.1.8 after installing cinnamon and cinnamon-session. I log into Cinnamon and get Gnome3. I will enable 3D in my VirtualBox settings for this VM and see what happens.

[edit] I think it's working now that I enabled 3D support in the Virtual Box settings. At least, I now have all the menu items at the bottom of the page, and the start menu is similar to LMDE now.

Dose Cinnamon need a 3D capable graphics card to run?

The reason I ask is because I'm running Linux Mint 12 in Gnome Classic (which is apparently actually Fail-back mode) because Mint isn't too keen on my on-board graphics card (never has been from Mint 8 to now no compiz)

Anyway I installed Cinnamon select the session at login & just get the same Gnome classic I had before. Its not a major problem as I am kinda getting used to this new look anyway but I just wondered.....

Cinnamon is based on Gnome 3 and its Mutter window manager. Mutter currently fails to run without 3d acceleration, but in future Mints it will be working fine without 3D.

If we could get a wobbly windows plugin for mutter. I'd be in hog heaven with Cinnamon, once Clem does what he plans with it.

Driver issues aside...

I have the same issue as mentioned the first post.

I have no Cinnamon or MINTMENU.

My desktop looks no different to the default desktop even though I clearly log into a Cinnamon session.

Thanks. I have checked additional drivers, and there are none present. Is there a particular driver that I need ? (There are many listed on NVIDIA website), and how do I go about installing the required driver ?. None of the documentation I have read about cinnamon mentions additional driver requirements

The following is the response to the terminal command $ cinnamon --replace

$ cinnamon --replace
failed to create drawable

(cinnamon:3172): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context
Window manager error: Unable to initialize Clutter.

I dont know that this means. Hope someone can help. Thanks

Direct Rendering Yes does not prove that 3D is working. If the GLX Renderer is "Rasterizer" or "N/A" your graphics card lacks a 3D driver, or the driver is not working OK.

I enabled 3D for VirtualBox and gave it 32 MB of video memory. The screen I was shown after I booted with the new VirtualBox settings is it shows a GNOME 3 screen and then quickly the entire screen went blank with nothing. Below is the screenshot of a running LM 12 on VirtualBox with the settings as mentioned above and the screen going blank after i logged in using Cinnamon.



I tried the "inxi" command on my main host (Ubuntu 11.04) and these are the results from my terminal below:

Why would I receive a blank screen for LM 12 with 3D enabled ? With a blank screen, I could not install any drivers in LM 12 since I could not interact. Hopefully this blank screen is not the equivalent of Windows blue screen .
