access shutdown / logout without clicking?

Postby michael.conner on Sat Feb 04, 2012 3:15 pm

Is there any way to include "Shutdown" and "Logout" in the menu via keyboard entry? I love the fact that I can just hit Super and start entering application name and hit return (just like with Gnome Shell and like with Kupfer in Gnome 2.x); however, with Kupfer, at least, I could start typing "Shutdown" and I could call up the Shutdown/Restart/Suspend/Hibernate menu without having to use the mouse at all.

Is this possible with Cinnamon? Don't get me wrong, this is a minor inconvenience at best. I'm thrilled with having a productive desktop back.

This may help

Terminal Commands
shutdown -h now : This will shutdown no reboot.
shutdown -r now : This will shutdown and reboot.
Maybe you can enter those as commands in a short cut. I don't use main edition so I don't know for sure.

Thanks, yeah, that seems to take just a few more keystrokes than I'd like, as I'd have to type "sudo pm-suspend/-hibernate" or "sudo shutdown -h/-r now" and then give root password to get it to actually take the command.

Turns out, though, that hitting the power button brings up the dialog, so that's arguably a keyboard shortcut :-) However, it doesn't necessarily have immediate focus, so I have to move the pointer over it and tap the touchpad to get it to be able to be in focus, so I can use the tab or arrow keys to choose the option (suspend/reboot/etc) that I want.

I think you've put me in the right direction, though.

I haven't tried the upcoming Cinnamon 1.4, but I hope it would provide logical keyboard access at least to major menu items (such as log out and shutdown).

E.g. when opening the main Cinnamon menu (by hitting the "window" key), one would expect to be able to navigate up/down the spine where the user's own Favourites and the Lock/Logout/Quit options are located.

This only became obvious to me when due to a bug in the synaptics pointer drivers my laptop's touchpad would occasionally go awol. Losing a pointing device doesn't affect the great majority of users, but when it hits it may leave the user feeling rather helpless.

Fixing the main menu's "spinal issue" would IMO also benefit the majority since it would grant any user quick keyboard access to the favourite menu items they themselves chose.

Having now tried Cinnamon 1.4 in live session, while it feels snappier there's still no keyboard access to shutdown or logout as far as I could tell. Interestingly I just learned that both in Cinnamon 1.3 and the new version 1.4, the rest of the main menu's "spine", i.e favourite apps, can indeed be accessed via Alt-Tab (along with up/down arrow action) when main menu has been opened using keyboard.

It might also be useful if "logout" and "shutdown" options were highlighted if the user entered those terms in the search box...

You can install the Classic Menu applet (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=99460), then to log out or shutdown you've only have to press your Super key and then Tab to navigate the Places and System icons:
