Cinnamon - not working under VirtualBox?

I tried Mint 12 on real hardware and cinnamon worked fine.

I just installed Virtualbox on Win 7 x64 and then 64bit Mint 12 on a VM, and updated it first, then I installed cinnamon with synaptic package manager, then I logged out and enabled cinnamon. But it doesn't work. I still get the built in WM when I log back in even tho cinnamon is enabled in the login window settings.

Just a sec. Let me reboot the VM to make sure what's up.... Reboot... No. It shows in the login screen as the enabled option, but when I log in, it looks just like it did when I first installed Mint. So cinnamon is not working.

Something strange about VM that keeps Cinnamon from working?

Fixed it. All you have to do is enable 3D acceleration in your VBox configuration.
When I restarted the system after that, Cinnamon came right up.

duh... But there was no indication that this was the problem.

Cinnamon is based on gnome shell. Gnome shell required 3d acceleration.

I had Cinnamon working fine with Mint running native on my Dell 9300, but I am having same problem of getting Cinnamon to work with Mint 13 running on Virtualbox 4.1.8 on WinXP on the same laptop. I have installed Guest Additions and enabled 3D acceleration (with 64MB video memory) but still no success.

Any help/pointer in diagnosing the problem is greatly appreciated.

64MB isn't enough you need to crank it up to 128MB

Thanks for the suggestion. But as my laptop video card only has a 128MB, allocation of 128MB or even 96MB caused the VM to crash on start-up.

Also, others have apparently succeeded with only a 32MB allocation (see, e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VN2xT1002c) -- making me wonder if I have a misconfiguration elsewhere.
