Applet/extension for checking gmail/thunderbird

Is there an applet or extension that will show how many unread messages are in thunderbird or even just a gmail account? It's the only feature "I need" from my old setup with docky. It's very useful seeing unread count from the inbox.

Why do you need an applet for that? Just use the firetray extension for thunderbird.

Yes, FireTray seems to be a good solution. Thanks for the tip!
