Move windows between monitors? (by right-click in panel)

Postby gosa on Mon Apr 16, 2012 5:14 pm

Hi All,

Just did an upgrade to Update Pack 4 in LMDE, and instantly disliking the default gnome shell (or whatever it's called) I installed both Mate and Cinnamon to try them both out before deciding.

So far I'm checking out Cinnamon, and I don't know - maybe I'm the only one having this kind of setup, but something I can't wrap my head around is how I can move a window from one monitor to the other without dragging the top of it or without actually seeing the "source" monitor.

This function - that I'm used to have "pre-UP4" where it was enough to right-click (in the panel) on the program/window I wanted to move and just choose move to be able to drag it into view don't seem to exist in Cinnamon.
- Is that right, or have I missed something?

BTW - before anyone asks: I have two monitors connected to my computer. My "main" monitor standing on my desk, and a TV on the other side of a wall that I use for watching movies/tv-series. -as it is now - with Cinnamon throwing all kind of messages at me they seem to end up on the TV's desktop instead of on my main monitor making me feel like I do nothing but run between office/livingroom to check out/action things. "Pre-UP4" this wasn't a problem since I could drag any window I wanted, but now... It starts smelling like a dealbreaker.

So - any ideas? Would it be worth the effort to ask for this (seemingly) simple function to be added to a future release of Cinnamon, or am I the only one missing this?

Thanks in advance,

Oh, well... I suppose I have to try Mate instead then.
And after that maybe XFCE...

I don't have multiple monitors so I haven't tested this, and I'm not exactly sure what this applet does so it might not be even related to your problem, but here is an applet that has something to do with multiple monitors: http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/43.

Hi,

Sorry for getting back a bit late to you...

I've looked at the applet you suggested (didn't test it though - trying not to mix Debian with Ubuntu, and it seems like this one needs some Ubuntu stuff added) and from what it looks like it's a display switcher making it easier to turn on/off displays. Don't think it allows me to move windows between displays.

This puts me in a difficult position, because I have - since my previous post - installed the latest spins of LMDE in Virtualbox (both xfce & mate/cinnamon) and it seems both Mate & XFCE supports dragging windows around by right-clicking on panel and selecting "move". Should be simple, but what makes it difficult for me is that I really like Cinnamon which makes me have to choose between either switching off my second monitor every time an application/message-window defaults to it or install a DE that is "second" on my list. (Not saying second in any other way than personal preference)

If I knew just a little bit about coding I would try to makr an applet out of it, but since I don't...
- Oh, well... all these choices that life provides.

Anyway - thanks for your reply!
