I'm starting to suspect this is hardcoded in the theming engine... I don't know if my guess is right or wrong, but it looks like the top picture is how Adwaita (the engine, not the theme of the same name) draws it, the bottom one is how Unico does.

u may be right monsta....if i knew what that exact widget of the theme was called i could google a bit more..

The little clickable thingy is probably called "expander" or something like that. Or you can google the whole treeview (GtkTreeView).
