Installing themes on Mint 13 MATE 64-bit

Post by lamprecht »

Hello, I just transitioned from a lifetime of using windows to Linux mint. And of course I'm a newbie and I don't really know how to do anything.

I'm trying to install a theme, specifically this one:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ ... ent=148447

I downloaded the archive and extracted it to my desktop, then I copied the folder over to the /usr/share/themes folder
I used this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9BZ7_w_d6g

However, even though this folder is full of themes, having around 29 folders, I only have two themes to choose from: Mint-X and Mint-Z which are almost the same thing

So how exactly do I use this other ACID theme?

That link is an XFCE theme. You need Metacity themes, or Gnome 2.x themes.

What all do you see in /usr/share/themes?

I see.

Some of those are not full desktop themes, but rather just icon themes or window decoration themes. For example, you won't see Aging Gorilla in the Theme tab of the Appearance tool, but if you click Customize and choose the Window Border tab, you'll find the Aging Gorilla window decorations in the selection list.

You might actually find your ACID theme's controls that way too; if so, you can start with one of the delivered desktop themes, click Customize, and change it to include whatever ACID components are available.

Thanks, it worked! Somehow it didn't show up before but it finally did.
EDIT:
actually it doesn't fully work. it doesn't really look like how it's supposed to, basically just the colors changed.

Again, that's probably because the theme you installed is an XFCE theme, and you are not using XFCE, so the results will be uneven. You'll have better luck with gnome-look themes if you stick to Metacity or Gnome 2 themes.

In Linux mint:
Go to usr
Go to share
Rightclick on themes
Click on :!: 'Open as Administrator', input password.
Paste the folder with the theme.
For this you don't need the Terminal, easier for beginner users. :)

That is a general technique for installing themes, yes.

However, it does not address the OP's question of why he can't use the theme he has already installed. Fortunately that has already been answered in this thread.

I'm burrowing this thread, if that's ok :)

I'm on Linux Mint 14 Mate x64, is there any specific site for themes compatible with Mate?
Is it the GTK2 section at Gnome-look.org or do anyone have another tip?

This is the best place I know of. You can also look in http://linuxmint-art.org/, but this is really just a sub-set of Gnome-look. You might also want to take a look in http://opendesktop.org/?xsection=art, or http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Environment/, to see if you find anything not covers by Gnome-look.org.

Customizing is fun. Happy hunting :D ...
