Add Mint 15 Login Themes to Mint 16

Postby HilltopsGM on Sun Feb 02, 2014 1:51 pm

I can't seem to find where or how to add these login themes.

I was tinkering with Mint 15 6 or 7 months ago and found the HTML Login Theme called "Fullmoon".

I THINK it was already in the list to choose from when I installed it, but I can't be sure.
In comparison, the Mint 16 choices are pretty slim:

I believe I found the creator of the Fullmoon Theme here in this post http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=126979&start=80#p707334

. . . and it looks like I can download it from here:
http://samriggs.deviantart.com/art/FullMoon-MDM-Animated-Theme-364356194?q=gallery%3Asamriggs%2F30205740&qo=0

but I am not sure how to add it as an option for the login screen for Mint 16.

Could someone clarify this for me please?

Thanks

I don't know if it matters, but I maybe should have mentioned that I am running Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit.

Hi HilltopsGM,

I found there was a major problem installing the FullMoon theme from this link: ********* NOW FIXED - SEE POSTS BELOW
http://samriggs.deviantart.com/art/FullMoon-MDM-Animated-Theme-364356194?q=gallery%3Asamriggs%2F30205740&qo=0

I found there was a permissions problem with the folders in the theme and unless I changed the permissions after downloading
and unzipping the file, FullMoon theme would not install properly and then I could not log in.

So I had to do this to get it to install from that file download:

Save the file fullmoon_mdm_animated_theme_by_samriggs-d60xf1e.zip to Downloads folder

Right-click the .zip file > click Extract here
"FullMoon" folder appears > right-click it > click Properties > Permissions

Under "Group" section, click down arrow next to "Folder access":
change from "None" to "Access files"

Under "Others" section - do the same - change to
Folder access: Access files

Click "Apply Permissions to Enclosed Files"

Click Close

Go back to Downloads

Right-click the "FullMoon" folder again > click "Compress ..."
(it should already be like this - if not, make it so):
Filename: FullMoon .tar.gz
Click Create

"FullMoon.tar.gz" will be in Downloads folder
Keep the Downloads folder open

Go to Menu > Administration > Login window
Click and drag* the file "FullMoon.tar.gz" from open Downloads folder onto the open Login - Theme window

A message pops up:
"Install the theme from 'FullMoon.tar.gz'?
Click Install

Choose FullMoon from the list.

*OR
click Add, then under Places column click File System
in right pane, double-click - home > username > Downloads
click on FullMoon.tar.gz
click Install

It works now.

Another method -
If you still have the themes from a LM15 install (?), you could just copy the theme folders you want to install from LM15 /usr/share/mdm/html-themes
to LM16 /usr/share/mdm/html-themes folder (need root permission).

PS. Normally, if these themes are already in .tar.gz file format, you can install them easily.
But if the themes are in .zip mode (like this one - because deviantart requires .zip file format), you would have to download them, unzip them and recompress them as .tar.gz files in order to install them with the "drag onto the window" method or by clicking the Add button on the login window Theme screen.

Or, as mentioned, you could just unzip them, and as root, copy or move the theme folders that appear to /usr/share/mdm/html-themes.

It's just that this particular theme's .zip file has folders with the permissions problem that needed to be fixed before trying to install it.

I have PM'd the theme's author about the problem.

Thanks caribriz much appreciated for helping out on this one.
I changed ther permissions in the deviantart one, sorry about that, it happened when I saved it to my external then back to the hard drive again, the external changed it on me.
It's all good now.
If anymore has this issue please pm me about it, I think I got them all now.
Also deviantart will not let me use tar.gz compressed files so I had to zip them instead, just extract the folder re-compress it as tar.gz the drag it into the login screen (html section) and it'll install for you.
Thanks again

Thanks Sam for fixing the permissions.

So now ignore the part about changing the permissions in my post above.

As Sam said, you now just need to do this to install the theme:

Download the .zip file to Downloads folder
Right-click the .zip file > click Extract here
"FullMoon" folder appears > right-click it > click "Compress ..."
Filename: FullMoon .tar.gz
Click Create

"FullMoon.tar.gz" will be in Downloads folder
Keep the Downloads folder open

Go to Menu > Administration > Login window
Click and drag the file "FullMoon.tar.gz" from open Downloads folder onto the open Login - Theme window

A message pops up:
"Install the theme from 'FullMoon.tar.gz'?
Click Install

Choose FullMoon from the list.

The theme works perfectly now.

Out of curiosity, could one grab all the themes that were available in Mint 15 from here:

http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=Olivia

. . . and install them?

If so, what package would they be listed under?
None of the names that I see there seem to imply they have anything to do with Login Themes.

To get the rest of the LM15 login themes into LM16 -

From your linked "Olivia" page in the repository
http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=Olivia

Scroll down to mint-mdm-themes
On far right column click on Source dir

Click on mint-mdm-themes_1.1.0.tar.gz - 2013-May-22 04:23:03 18.6M application/octet-stream

Download the file to Downloads folder
Right-click the .tar.gz file > click Extract here
mint-mdm-themes-1.1.0 folder appears

You need to edit one of the files in the theme "Clouds GL" - or it will say "Linux Mint 15 Olivia" on the login screen (the rest of the themes are ok)

So do this first:

Open a terminal, and enter this command (copy/paste it into the terminal):
Code: Select all
gedit ~/Downloads/mint-mdm-themes-1.1.0/usr/share/mdm/html-themes/"Clouds GL"/index.html

press enter

The file index.html opens in gedit.

From gedit's menubar, click Search > Find
Search for: Olivia
click Find

Change the line that is highlighted:
Code: Select all
<p><b>Linux Mint 15 "Olivia"</b></p>

to read:
Code: Select all
<p><b>Linux Mint 16 "Petra"</b></p>

Save the file
Close it.

Now, copy the theme folders from the extracted .tar.gz file in ~/Downloads to
/usr/share/mdm/html-themes (as root):

Open a terminal, and enter:
Code: Select all
gksudo nemo

press enter

A nemo window with Elevated Privileges opens
Warning: you are now root user dealing with system files - be very careful

In the sidebar,
double-click File System

Then in the window itself, double-click these folders -
home > your-user-name > Downloads > mint-mdm-themes-1.1.0 > usr > share > mdm > html-themes

Hold Ctrl key down, and left click on each of these theme folders:

BlackNBlue
BlimpCity
Clouds GL
Mechanical
SpaceRace
The Machine

Don't choose Clouds, common or FullMoon folders (Clouds and common folders already exist in the destination folder,
and you already have FullMoon installed).

Click Edit > Copy

Again from Nemo's sidebar (in Elevated Privileges window)
click File System
In window, double-click the folders:
usr > share > mdm > html-themes

Click Edit > Paste

Close Nemo's Elevated Privileges window
Close the terminal.

Menu > Administration > Login Window

The themes should be in the list to choose.
