Took me a while but your tip did send me off in the right direction.

One of the themes I'd installed had a faulty thumbnail.png file and after I modified permissions on it all has gone back to normal.

Wow, nicest Cinnamon theme yet or what? Cinnamint > http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/themes/view/120. Just added it to my system and I'm in love! I put a little Mint icon on my Menu instead of the cog, and now with this theme when you go to your hot corner the effect looks amazing. Give it a go. :)

Dumb question, I installed the theme. I can see it, but when I click on it nothing changes... It stays highlighted like it's selected, but the theme does not actually change...

Does your panel change?

Try to restart Cinnamon (right click on empty spot in panel, expand "Troubleshoot" and click "Restart Cinnamon")

Yep, that's either MATE or Gnome Classic - Cinnamon doesn't look like that. So you're not seeing Cinnamon theme changes because you're not in Cinnamon :)

Log out, carefully select Cinnamon, log in. If you still get a MATE/Gnome Classic desktop, Cinnamon doesn't like your graphics card/driver

Howdy all.
I don't know if this can be done or not, so far I cannot find a way to do and thought maybe someone else came across a way to do it.
Is there a way to make the menu background different from the rest of the popups? (exmaple, notifications, calendar, settings etc).
I want to put an image as the background for the menu section but not for the rest of the popups.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sam

Hi samriggs, i have created that Western wooden Theme. I did it man :D :D :D :D :D !!check this bro http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=157708

I was wondering if you can make a GTK theme for it. Actually that Wood 'n Tux had a GTK 2 theme included in the zip file but I can't change it into GTK 3 :(

Cool
for the gtk3 just snag one from another theme (in the usr/share/theme folder) like mintx gtk for gtk3 and just make the same changes the gtk2 has, usually the gtkrc file change all the colors to match the gtk2 one, and any images and links, pretty much the same stuff stuff as the gtk2.
the mintx one is a basic great theme that has everyhitng you need, just match it on up to the gtk2 and bam your done :)

I don't see why as I put the theme folders into the directory as root
I see why. You "put the theme folders into the directory as root."
You need to make sure that your user name has permissions to access the directories.

@phill1978

The problem is I can't upload it at http://linuxmint-art.org/ or http://gnome-look.org/ is the size of the file. The maximum allowed there is 2MB :D

Brahim you can also use deviantart for cinnamon themes as well, I use it for a lot of stuff, plus it keeps everything in one neat place, and there's linux groups that will probably take it also in their section (might be one for cinnamon but I'm not sure) I think the new rule of cinnamon themes on the cinnamon theme site (run by linux mint) only allows cinnamon inside now no more gtk and metacity included, unless that got changed recently, if you want to package it with all three deviantart is a great place to put stuff on and everyone pretty much knows to go there also now and of course you can put the cinnmaon only one up on linux mint cinnamon theme site as well without the gtk and metacity (I'd check though first it might of gotten changed.
