Linux Mint 12 default desktop
How would I put icons on the desktop like firefox.

Navigate to this directory: /usr/share/applications
Then simply mark the application you want on your desktop, copy it, and paste it onto the desktop, that will create a desktop launcher.

In Cinnamon all this is much easier.
