conky disappears from desktop

I've managed to install
conky lua but when I log in conky appears for a split second and then disappears from the desktop, the process is still running. I have tried writing a script to restart conky and added it to the start up but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

this is what I get when I run conky from command line

Conky: desktop window (10000a2) is subwindow of root window (b9)
Conky: window type - override
Conky: drawing to created window (0x1c00001)
Conky: drawing to double buffer
strangely, when I close the term window that is running conky, conky closes but then restarts and works as it should

Well I have got conky working properly, but now totally fubar'ed the gui trying to get compiz working
