HOW TO DOWNGRADE TO COMPIZ 0.8.6 IN LINUXMINT 11

Postby Pranaone on Thu May 26, 2011 11:06 am

You've probably noticed that not all Compiz plugins work as they used to in Linuxmint 10 and changing some of the
default Compiz settings results in quite a few bugs. This can be solved by downgrading Compiz to version 0.8.6.
Warning: the instructions
below are for the classic Ubuntu desktop but it does apply to linuxmint. Further
more, this is experimental (and reverting the changes is a bit complicated and may not work exactly as described in this post) so use it at your own risk!
1.In the terminal run the following commands to purge Compiz:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge compiz compiz-plugins-extra compiz-plugins-main

2.Purge the CompizConfig Settings Manager too:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge compizconfig-settings-manager

3.Add Giodic's PPA and install Compiz
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:guido-iodice/compiz-0.8.6-natty
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install compiz compiz-core compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-f

If you want to revert the changes
and use Compiz 0.9.4 again, run
the commands below in a
terminal:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:guido-iodice/compiz-0.8.6-natty
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get purge compiz-plugins-extra compiz-plugins-main compiz-fusion-
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

BEWARE THAT THIS MIGHT CHANGE YOUR DESKTOP TO THE DEFAULT UBUNTU LOOK.

The last line really needs a bunch more packages included. You will probably want to add all or most of these. So replace step #3 with this:

Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:guido-iodice/compiz-0.8.6-natty
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install compiz compiz-core compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported compiz-gnome compiz-plugins compizconfig-backend-gconf compizconfig-settings-manager libdecoration0 python-compizconfig simple-ccsm

Tried this
Fresh install updated
Downgraded fine, but still no luck with a cube (seemed somehow easier in Ubuntu circa 10.04)
Tried the restoring instructions to get back up to stock... didn't work for me either
Even synaptic couldn't get the stock compiz back
Luckily I had a DVD with the Mint 11 iso to solve that for me...

still no cube... sigh

Sorry to hear about the lack of a compiz cube but discussing this on irc we concluded that cinnamon donuts are better. ... It's a long story. However, there is more to life and indeed a desktop than a spinny cube.

If I were going to pursue this, though, I'd start by posting some details about my graphics setup.

I did all the steps and it seemed to work fine. but when I went to open compiz, the first time I did it the icon wouldnt go down to the panel so i right clicked it in the menu and there wasnt the option to run the settings so i uninstalled and started over and did all the steps a second time, now when I go to the menu and try to find it it isnt even in the programs list and when i go to the package manager and try to reintsall it, it says it intalled already

when i get to the last step i get "E: Unable to locate package compiz-f".
I did every step in order.
