help with conky!

Post by ddsk1191 »

Hey everyone.
I am still really new to linux, so if I'm asking a stupid question just tell me so ;)
I decided to be a bit adventurous with my desktop so I installed conky from http://www.quicktweaks.com/2008/09/27/g ... u-desktop/
It installed correctly after a few failed attempts, but I am unable to:
1. get the gmail notifications
2. get the weather (according to the comments, yahoo changed their weather locations, so now it doesn't work on this version of conky). is there any other way to modify the script so I can get the weather?
Also, when I run conky from terminal, I get this error line:

Code: Select all

Conky: /home/devdharm/.conkyrc: 14: no such configuration: 'border_margin'
Conky: desktop window (12000cd) is subwindow of root window (15a)

If anyone can help me with even one of these things, it would be very much appreciated!

python: can't open file '/home/devdharm/scripts/gmail_parser.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
have you created a gmail.py file???

Edit: hey tried the conky script from the linked place i got some errors too so rewrote it. copy paste the gmail.pl file in home/devdharm/.scripts and conkyrc in home/devdharm and too get your weather thing working do the things mentioned here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... ky+weather. if you get an error again just post.

Change the username and password to your username and password in the gmail.pl file.

Also adding a preview of how it looks now. Tried to keep it like the original. Also you still need to get the fonts from the linked place.

Did you recreate the directory structure that the .conkyrc is expecting to find and place the scripts into the correct directory. Try this:

Code: Select all

ls /home/devdharm/scripts/
If it fails with a "Directory not found" error, then there's your problem. To fix:

Code: Select all

mkdir /home/devdharm/
mkdir /home/devdharm/scripts/
Then extract the scripts into ~/devdharm/scripts/ and try again.

Having said that, and to be honest, I wouldn't do it that way on a single user system. I would create a scripts directory in ~/ and extract the scripts there, then amend the .conkyrc to change all references to /home/devdharm/scripts/ to ~/scripts/

In my mind it keeps things tidier and all together in your home directory, rather than a new home directory created for the purpose.

(nb: ~/ is a shortcut for /home/yourusername/)

Viper, I tried your gmail script and it looks like it works, but as you can see, it keeps giving me a 401 error. Any ideas?

Code: Select all

Conky: /home/devdharm/.conkyrc: 14: no such configuration: 'border_margin'
Conky: desktop window (12000cd) is subwindow of root window (15a)
Conky: window type - override
Conky: drawing to created window (0x6600001)
Conky: drawing to double buffer

The weather thing is kind of complicated. I created the account on the site and downloaded and installed the scripts via ppa, but I have no clue how to integrate it with my conky setup..
Also, I didn't see where to download the fonts from the page.

Roken, I checked the directory and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

ok first the fonts can be found here http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/83257/conkyfonts.zip just download them and copy them in the usr/share/fonts (you can do this by opening the folder as administrator). second the weather thing is already integrated in the script just open the script and change the location( it will be something like UKXX0103) to your location. After that open the file .conkyForecast.config (it should be in your /usr/share/conkyforecast/ folder just copy it to your home folder and add a . to its name to make it hidden) and change these parameters( the first two you will find in the email the website sent you)
XOAP_PARTNER_ID =
XOAP_LICENCE_KEY =
DEFAULT_LOCATION = UKXX0103

as for gmail try this

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install ca-certificates
if that doesn't work try the new script just copy paste over the original.

Edit: Also try this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1697816&page=2 for gmail error.

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=188&t=78385 on how to configure conkyForecast which is needed for conky weather.

Step 2: Register at http://www.weather.com/services/xmloap.html
Register and get your XOAP* codes. They will be emailed to you.
You will need these to use the conkyForecast script and the values you receive from this registration will need to be entered into your ~/.conkyForecast.config file.
The fields are
XOAP_LICENCE_KEY= and
XOAP_PARTNER_ID=

Hey thanks for the help guys, I think I have it up and running now. The gmail and conkyweather scripts started working after restarting the computer. The only problem I have now is that conky doesn't blend into the desktop now, it just hovers over any windows I open.

try changing

own_window yes
own_window_type override

to

own_window_class Conky
own_window yes
own_window_type normal

in the conkyrc
