Problem with Opacify in compiz

Postby thedoctar on Sun Oct 30, 2011 1:01 am

I have opacify enabled in compiz, but opacify doesn't apply to when new windows open. Whenever I open a new window, the window won't opacify unless i restart opacify, e.g. if i open a new window opacify won't apply to it unless I press super+o twice, which is turning opacify off then on. Screenshots are attached.

Also, in the screenshot I am using Linux mint but I have configured it to look like Ubuntu and installed the Ubuntu theme packages.

Compiz in Mint 11 is somewhat broken out of the box. Please search the forums for compiz problems and you will find various solutions though I can't say if this will address your specific issue.

If you haven't already, you should subscribe to the bug report for this on launchpad and leave a comment and click the link that says it affects you also and all of that stuff and things:

Here is a ppa that address the problem:
https://launchpad.net/~guido-iodice/+archive/compiz-0.8.6-natty
Anyone here brave enough to try it?

Here is the project homepage:
http://www.compiz.org/
The latest stable release of Compiz is 0.8.8. A C++ rewrite has been announced on 24th December 2009 and is now released as a beta version (0.9.5.x). This is a major rework of the whole project, aimed at easing future development.

You can also install all updates, to get 0.9.5, which usually fixes things. But indeed, if 0.9.5 still won't work, you can use that PPA to get your old Compiz back.

Yeah, I've done that.

What would the side effects be if I did install the older compiz package? And would the side effects be reversible?

Isn't 0.9.5 still in beta? And Mint 11 uses compiz 0.9.4.

0.9.4 is indeed installed by default but 0.9.5 is available in the updates. This update fixes Compiz problems for most people. But indeed 0.9.5 is a beta, for some people it doesn't yet work right.

Installing 0.8.6 from the PPA is reversible: purge all Compiz packages, remove the PPA (with Software Sources) and install the compiz packages again. I've also done that in my Mint 11 days when I discovered the 0.9.5 upgrade.
The only difference I've seen so far between 0.8.6 and 0.9.5 is the workspace layout: 0.9.x has two rows of workspaces so the default four workspaces makes a square layout. But this is of course different when using the Cube, which works equally well in both.

Alright, thanks for your response. I'll try to install 0.8.6 and 0.9.5 and see which works better.
