[Mate] typing compiz at Menu crashes desktop

Is this a bug or is it just a problem with my install? When I type compiz in the menu it gets to "compi" and the desktop freezes, I can't open a virtual terminal with ctrl+alt t (i did enable this shortcut and it normally works)
but I can move to a terminal window with ctrl alt f1
when I am there I can sudo pkill -9 -u user and it will kill gnome (mate) and let me relog, but if I try to search compiz again, it freezes, everything just locks up.
*note* this is when compiz settings manager is not installed. When it is installed it does not crash
