What did you use for setting panel transparency? I always ended up with he panel going transparent but the applets staying opaque. I know I've done it right in the past, I just can't remember how now. I know it's not using compiz, because it has useless "real" transparency and makes text invisible as well.

forgive my ignorance, but all I did was install Macubuntu, change the wallpaper and select which dock look I liked. Whatever LMDE uses for 3D is the default, I assumed it was Compiz. Maybe not.

It might have to do with what icons you use. I noticed the calculator icon was opaque so I removed it.

Very nice work, all you need to complete your mac look is to use Global Menu. :)

Some of the themes make the applets appear opaque, it's only a matter of looking through them and see which give you full transparency.
EDIT: If you customize the theme in the gnome appearance window, browse the control themes till you find one that makes the applets appear transparent like the panel.

Instead of docky, use Cairo or AWN they're far more feature filled(awn) and more visually pleasing(Cairo)

EDIT2: I edited my desktop screenshot. More eyecandy ^.^

I'm running an LXDE desktop, so I try and keep things simple. While a Mint Debian LXDE spin would be nice, it's so easy to set up an LXDE session, I'm not sure it's even worth it.

LMDE Wallpaper from somewhere on Deviantart, Faenza icons (although I'm seriously considering going back to the wonderful customizable ffw set) and the elementary metacity theme with the Murrina Metaeroica gtk-theme to give it a bit more of a creamy coffee-touch compared to the somewhat bland grey :)
