From Cinnamon to Xfce?

From Cinnamon to Xfce?

Postby mr_fresh on Fri Apr 18, 2014 12:19 pm

Hi there,

after trying Suse, Manjaro and Mageia, I finally chose Linux Mint DE and I am very happy with it. So, I am using LMDE with the cinnamon desktop and now I would like to migrate to XFCE. I have already installed "xfce4" and "xfce4-goodies" via apt-get. But still cinnamon shows up.

So my question is: How can I "activate" the XFCE-desktop-environment?

Thank you!

At the login screen click the icon that lets you change your session. Change from the Cinnamon session you are currently using, to the Xfce session that will be listed there now also. You can then start removing Cinnamon packages if you so desire.

Mr. Fresh, I don't know your level of experience, but if you do not want to deal with all the tweaking. There is a distro called Solydx which is a debian testing base with xfce de.
LMDE at one time had kde and xfce de's for lm debian. But dropped them, and some folks, ( some from this community ) started SolydXK. I've tried them myself and they are very good, but I'm not a fan of kde, or xfce. Whatever you decide, good luck. :D

Hi there,

@xenopeek: Yes, that's the way it should be. BUT: I can't choose anything at the login screen. Did I forget anything? After now having installed task-xfce-desktop it says, that "mdm" cannot be started. So, I am a bit confused ...

@Crewp: Thank you for pointing at "Solydx". I'll check it out.

Anyway, I would really try to solve this problem because I would like to understand, how linux (debian) works.

If you install xfce4 and xfce4-goodies on cinnamon, then the login manager remain as the default mdm.

selecting session from mdm is by clicking the gear as you expected.

However, reading from your post that said about task-xfce-desktop
@xenopeek: Yes, that's the way it should be. BUT: I can't choose anything at the login screen. Did I forget anything? After now having installed task-xfce-desktop it says, that "mdm" cannot be started. So, I am a bit confused ...

Debian xfce task has another login manager , lightdm.
If you installed this task, then a few things will add into your OS, lightdm, debian desktop image ( the grey colour, plain image with debian logo), during installation it should prompt you to select mdm or lightdm...
Either way you should still be default to cinnamon desktop after a reboot.

If you select lightdm as the default login manager, it would look like this image
http://i57.tinypic.com/2116i4m.jpg
to select cinnamon or xfce session, click on the top-right corner as indicated by the cursor

If mdm cannot be started, you may need to reinstall mdm, or just reinstall lightdm.

Hey wayne128,

thank you - that worked out. I had to choose lightdm and it worked!

Is it possible to remove "cinnamon" now? Shall I use the "apt-get purge" command? What packages shall I choose?

Thank you all very much in advance!

Hi mr_fresh,

So you made it.

Sure you can remove, or purge cinnamon, after you have tested and happy about the xfce installation.

To know what packages it wants to remove just use synaptic if you like GUI method, it will popup a windows showing you a list of dependencies.

Else you can use command line with -s to simulate and see what it will remove.

Just show you :

lmde201403cin wayne # apt-get remove cinnamon -s
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
cinnamon cinnamon-screensaver mint-meta-debian-cinnamon nemo
nemo-fileroller nemo-share
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 6 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Remv mint-meta-debian-cinnamon [2014.02.05.1]
Remv nemo-fileroller [2.0.0+lmde]
Remv nemo-share [2.0.0+lmde]
Remv nemo [2.0.8+lmde]
Remv cinnamon-screensaver [2.0.3+lmde]
Remv cinnamon [2.0.14+lmde]

Thank you very much! Once again, all worked fine ...

The best thing about: the system works fine and did not crash ;-)
