[SOLVED] Cinnamon Session wont start after installing nvidia

Postby kaefert on Sun May 06, 2012 11:50 am

Hi there!

In the progress of trying to fix this issue: viewtopic.php?f=217&t=101434
I installed the nvidia properitary drivers like this:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-xconfig

and afterwards ran nvidia-xconfig to generate an xorg.conf file (I had none before)

But now I cannot start a new cinnamon session anymore, mate, gnome and gnome-classic work without a problem, but cinnamon just flickers a bit and then shows an very uninformative errorwindow that states in german that there was a problem that could not be solved, and then I get back to the login screen.

Had the same problem and I removed the nouveau driver, do a aptitude to search for the right name and take it out.

I uninstalled the nvidia driver and renamed the xorg.conf file, but that way x did not start. I now restored the xorg.conf file and replaced "diver nvidia" with "driver nv", gonna try to boot with this config file now.

the packages I uninstalled: nvidia-settings nvidia-alternative nvidia-vdpau-driver nvidia-glx nvidia-xconfig libgl1-nvidia-glx

didn't work.. gonna try to run this one next.
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg

EDIT2: Okey, I found that I can boot the kernel 2.6.39-2 I can boot without xorg.conf and start a cinnamon session. when I boot the kernel 3.2.0-2 without an xorg.conf I get hundrets of xorg-simple-helper processes but no GUI.

so I guess I somehow modified my 3.2.0 kernel to the worse by installing and removing the nvidia drivers, can somebody explain me how to get back to a clean 3.2.0 kernel, that allows me to use X without the properitary nvidia drivers? (or maybe alternative how to use cinnamon with the properitary nvidia driver)?

Okey, So it turns out I just was not throughly enough with uninstalling the nvidia driver. Here the full list I now uninstalled, after which I can again boot into cinnamon with the 3.2 kernel:

Code: Select all
glx-alternative-nvidia
libgl1-nvidia-alternatives
libgl1-nvidia-glx
libglx-nvidia-alternatives
nvidia-alternative
nvidia-glx
nvidia-kernel-common
nvidia-kernel-dkms
nvidia-settings
nvidia-support
nvidia-vdpau-driver
nvidia-xconfig
xserver-xorg-video-nvidia
