Unable to install Cinnamon 1.8.8

Post by tubia87 »

hi all,
I'm experiencing a strange thing after a dist-upgrade of LMDE.
Actually cinnamon doesn't start.
This is the error, after logging in:
Xsession: unable to launch "gnome-session-cinnamon" X session --- "gnome-session-cinnamon" not found; falling back to default session.
I purged cinnamon, but it's unable to install.
It's a sort of comma22 with dependencies.
this is what happens with apt-get install cinnamon: http://pastebin.com/3nKKDqJp
this happens with aptitude (which actually didn't solve the problem): http://pastebin.com/xREj8uJz
and this is the result of inxi -Srxxx: http://pastebin.com/48bg3k1c
The cinnamon version candidate:

Code: Select all

sudo apt policy cinnamon
cinnamon:
  Installato: (nessuno)
  Candidato: 1.8.8+lmde
  Tabella versione:
     1.8.8+lmde 0
        700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian/main amd64 Packages
Before the upgrade, cinnamon worked just fine.

To what did you upgraded? There is no new UP since UP7. So did you upgraded to true testing?

If you were upgrading to UP7, have you read this? http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=146220

Hi, thank you for the reply.
I didn't know very well the UP-thing before the breaking of the system, however, before dist-upgrade I checked debian-system-adjustments that was updated.
By the way, this morning I checked the Update Manager UI and the “Update Pack Info”: it reported me a conflict between debian jessie repository and the lmde's one. I disabled the debian repository.
I then followed the checklist here in particular using the command sudo aptitude purge $( deborphan --guess-all ). It removed a lot of packages.
After that, I reopened the Update Manager and it's saying, in the "Update Pack Info", that my system is using Linux Mint Debian Latest and is actually using Update Pack 7.
However, Cinnamon is no longer installed.

EDIT:
If I open synaptic and try to install cinnamon 1.8.8+lmde it says that it's impossible due to damaged packages. The package in red is cinnamon, although it's not installed.

If it was after dist-upgrade then it's too late, your system is now updated to Debian Testing.

indeed, it was too late. you'll need to wait until cinnamon 2.0 got released. until that you'll need to use something else. personally I'll suggest xfce mainly since it's small and easy to use. don't worry, it won't be very long. people said that it will arrive on this month.

thank you Monsta and kurotsugi.
So actually I am not able in anyway to install cinnamon, neither with aptitude.
A "solution" would be to reinstall everything, I suppose.

So it would seem that I am in this same boat.
I should not have done the update using UM without finding out all of the consequences.

So far I am able to use Mate so it is functioning but ...

I have found this http://ispire.me/downgrade-from-debian- ... to-wheezy/
and I was wondering if this would be a good idea.

Any suggestions?

By the way - having an update manager which will allow one to break (for lack of better term) their system is really off-putting for an average user and really limits the capacity to lure people away from Windows. People are used to Windows updates and are used to just clicking without understanding.

So you're putting your own fault on someone else shoulders... Nice job!
Who changed your sources.list file? If it's you, then this is entirely your fault.

edit: this is the proof, that it's is entirely your fault http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 34#p797134
You have changed your sources.list file, but you don't understand what you have done...

I believe that I have already accepted responsibility for my actions as per my post. I am not justifying my own ignorance but rather making a suggestion for the average user.

Is this what this forum is all about? Attacking someone who makes a mistake caused by their own ignorance? So much for the "community" aspect of Linux if it is.

Please learn to better communicate without coming off as aggressive.

And by the way - thanks for pointing it out that my switching a repository was the root of what happened - at least I learned something in your tirade. Also please note that I have edited the above quoted link (the proof).

Solved.
I was able to install cinnamon, finally, through aptitude.
At the first time, with sudo aptitude install cinnamon it suggested to install only certain libraries and to not install cinnamon. The second time I entered the command, it suggested also to install cinnamon.
This is the log of aptitude, in case someone need further help :)
