Changed Clementine's panel icon in Gnome; can't in MATE

I made a custom icon pack (we'll call it "Example"). In Gnome2, Clementine's panel icon used the custom icons in /usr/share/icons/Example/apps/24/clementine-panel.png and /usr/share/icons/Example/apps/24/clementine-panel-grey.png. In MATE, however, Clementine no longer uses these icons.

I've also tried linking them to the following directories with no success:
/usr/share/icons/Example/status/24
~/.icons/apps/24
~/.icons/status/24

I have verified that my MATE panel has a height of 24 pixels. Any ideas?
