If you'd create a RAM disk at startup and copy your backrgrounds to it,
switching will even be faster.
But the whole thing would be much nicer if you could also have different sets of icons per workplace,
e.g. links to manuals, sources and dev tools for your developer workplace,
music, videos and audio software for your creatice workplace ...

Maybe. But it does not give a similar, straight user experience as other desktops, instead sort of annoying popups,This is all native to KDEs Plasma desktop.
links on the desktop do not behave as expected, a menu which follows this Windows concept of favourites...
I gave it a new try by installing KDE-full.
After an hour of setting up and configurating it still didn't fit my needs.
Sorry, it was simply a ... NO.
I'll keep on searching for another solution.
