I have just moved (been pushed by Mint really) from XFCE to Mate. I can't say I'm enjoying the experience, since setting things up seems so much harder.
My biggest problem right now is the desktop icon text. The text is not 'solid'. It has a shadow to it. I cannot find a way to change this. All I want is some plain, solid, text. Is there a way? I don't even know which font it is meant to be. I have looked at the Appearance, Font settings, but am frankly none the wiser.
I am feeling I must be being very thick, but having spent hours on this I am no further forward.
I wish I could have stayed on XFCE, but with support withdrawn it seemed unwise.

Re: Icon fonts
I now see the font for icon text is sans. I can change its size, but cannot get rid of the 'shadow'. If I select an icon the shadow disappears and the text is white. For an unselected icon the text is white with a black shadow.
Is there no way to have black text on my pale backgound?
