Desktop icons

I have downloaded and extracted to /usr/share/icons some new icon themes I would like to use. But when I go to settings >> settings manger >> Appearance and click on the icon tab the icons I have imported don't show up although the one listed in the list can be seen.

How do I change the icon set to the one I want??
