LMDE Xfce - Install OpenBox?

LMDE Xfce - Install OpenBox?

Postby vikrang on Wed Apr 20, 2011 6:58 am

I have installed LMDE (201104) Xfce version as it is supposed to have numerous enhanhancements which boost performance. My question is : Can I install OpenBox and remove Xfce? ie ,

apt-get install openbox
apt-get purge xfce (to remove all Xfce stuff)

Then from terminal I can install SLIM for DM and go about configuring OpenBox like installing Dock , panels etc.. (i do not want OB to coexist with Xfce and want a sandalone DE based on OpenBox ).Is this safe or would break the install?

First install Openbox, then go into Openbox from the login screen, and when you are sure that you aren't using Xfce components you can indeed purge xfce4 (purge xfce does not work). The xfce4 package is only a script to install many xfce things at the same moment: the xfce packages themselves also need to be removed.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get --purge remove gtk2-engines-xfce libxfce4util-common xfconf xfdesktop4-data
sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

As you see, you need to remove 4 packages. After that, Xfce's dependencies are broken, so autoremove will uninstall Xfce.

Hello !
I find this guide for install openbox but I have a problem:

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/374

I have a problem at the step 7: obmenu doesn't appear, and if I write obmenu in the terminal I have this message:

paolo@traveller ~ $ obmenu
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/obmenu", line 21, in <module>
import obxml, gtk, gtk.glade, gobject, random, time, os, sys
ImportError: No module named obxml

Can someone helpme please ?

Are you sure that you don't want to just install Crunchbang with OpenBox? It works perfectly out of the box, and it's also based on Debian Squeeze. If you really want to convert your system instead of reinstalling, you might consider using the Crunchbang repos in addition to the Debian and LMDE ones (and asking for advice on their forums, where there are a whole lot of OpenBox pros).

I like #! too, but now they are stable, and LMDE xfce is testing  I think using their repos can mess my system.
Also I have find the Mint Openbox tutorial and I ask for help

True, but you could start over from scratch with #! Openbox and then switch your repos to testing (if you like) and I bet you'd have better results and be done a whole lot faster. OTOH if what you want is to learn how to do it on your own, then that's fine, too. I've spent a lot of late nights doing things like that myself...

I'd avoid messing with the patch for now. You should be able to bring up obconf by hitting alt+f2 and entering
Code: Select all
python /usr/bin/obmenu
or by editing the menu.xml (I think it's in ~/.config/openbox/ but I forget), finding /usr/bin/obmenu and prepending python so it reads the same way.
