Linux is going to get Even Faster for Gaming :)
a Q & A is going on now on the phoronix Fourms and the Wayland Developers claim it is going to be even faster then Xorg it's going to make the Linux vs Windows Gap greater

Or will there be next to no difference from the current situation?

Gaming under Wayland should be better than X in terms of performance, even gaming under XWayland should be better than stock X because we're taking out round-trips and "Workaround" code. Input lag I expect to better as well since its simplification of the stack. Gamepad support I'm not sure about honestly, it might come down to pure and simple kernel driver support.

well there is a technicality that should be not too hard to sort but Canoical and therefore Ubuntu -- by association Linux Mint have decreed Wayland progress to be too slow and so took their code and moved onto Mir

So anything that Ubuntu do ... valve will follow and other devs will probably follow too. Which means Mint will follow (if they wish to keep people who want to play games on linux)

So there will be another split in the linux community Mir V weyland (even though the both are almost the same)

Wayland has been Stable ready for Development for around a year and Kbunutu is not going to use Mir it's going to use Xorg / Wayland :D
