Euro Trucks 2 starting with black screen

I recently bought Euro Trucks Simulator 2 on steam for linux, and when I start the game, all I get is a black screen with sound. I have an intel HD 4000 graphics chipset, and I beleive I have the mesa drivers properly installed. I'm not really sure what the problem could be, as it seems to be working fine for other people.

That's correct. The Linux System requirements on Steam's ET2 page show "MESA may not work reliably with ETS2". Always read the system requirements carefully. Also this blog post, which clarifies ET2 is not working at all on older mesa versions and still has artifacts on newer mesa versions (that was in April last year though).

Which version of Linux Mint do you have? On Linux Mint 16 you would be using mesa 9.2 I think. You can upgrade to mesa 10.1 using the xorg-edgers PPA: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa. You'll be running on the edge though, so it might give you other problems and you shouldn't consider doing this if you don't want to risk stability of your system. But it might let you run ET2.

The game works fine on my laptop with HD4000 and MESA 9.2.0, so @computerbob lies, xenopeek is partly right though, as I had artifacts in Linux Mint 15, but it works just fine after updating everything (from level 1 to 3 updates with default repositories, so I am not sure what exactly fixed this, I guess MESA update). If default repos do not help you, try updating MESA from a different source.

I have Linux mint 16. It's a fresh install and prior to this I didn't have any version of Linux installed on the system. It also shows Mesa 9.2. I only am going to use this for ETS2 (my normal windows gaming pc is at home while I'm at college using a MacBook dual booting Linux mint 16.) I will try updating to Mesa 10 of that's what you guys think will work? What about trying another desktop environment? I'm using cinnamon at the moment.

I'm not sure, but konjad is using Xfce and Xfce by default won't make use of your graphics card while Cinnamon does us it. Perhaps that causing a problem. I'd say it's worth a shot trying Xfce (or MATE).

1. Install all level 1-3 updates, restart, try if ETS2 works.
2. If not: Add repositories with most recent MESA, update, restart, try ETS2.
3. If it still doesn't work as it should, install Xfce, restart, run Mint in Xfce mode and check ETS2.
4. If this still doesn't fix the problem, Mint 16 must have some issues previous one does not. You might also try asking on official ETS2 forum or just check how is it in Mint 15.

Cinammon/KDE/Gnome3 are rather crappy, as they use lots of resources for pretty animations and decline performance in games and 3D software.

I installed all of the updates; that didn't work. Then I updated to MESA 10.1; that didn't work. Then I tried xfce; that didn't work. So now I am going to try a reinstall of the game, and if that doesn't work, I will try ubuntu 13.10 to see if I can get things working. Linux Mint is my distribution of choice, but really the only use I have for linux other than tinkering at this point is to play that game so I need to figure out how to get it working. Thanks for the help guys. I will post back on here if I ever get it working. Its possible that it just has something to do with my specific hardware.

Hi all, I am facing the same issue but with the Intel HD3000 SandyBridge graphic card. Mesa-devel 10 has not solve the too. But I tried Ubuntu 13.10 and there the game works great (in Mint 15 I have flashing screen). Isn't this a configuration issue? :idea:

Works fine under Ubuntu 13.10, so it has to be something specific to Linux Mint 16.
