Steam games not working after installing NVIDIA card (SOLVED

Postby bushblade on Fri Mar 21, 2014 7:20 pm

Hi I am using Mint Cinnamon 16 64 bit and have just fitted and installed a new graphics card (Geforce GTX 460) I installed the propietary drivers following this thread viewtopic.php?f=59&t=154932 which seamed to have worked.

However I can't play any games through steam. I get this error on starting steam

''OpenGL GLX context is not using direct rendering, which may cause performance problems.
For more information visit https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... ZB-7457.''

And if I ignore it and try to play a game I get the error in my screenshot.

I found this thread viewtopic.php?f=225&t=144708 but I could not get any of those solutions to work.

Any help is much appreciated.

Will

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Just to add it's only games through steam. If I play games not through steam, they run fine.

Did you reinstall Mint after changing video card? That would probably be a good thing to do if you haven´t. Also the guide that you have followed seems make it a lot more difficult then it need to be. Every time I reinstall I just go to "System" > "Driver manager" and there I choose one of the proprietary drivers, (319 at the moment) which I´ve never had any problems with so far.
Desktop: Intel i5 4670K, 16 GB, Geforce GTX 770, LM 17 Cinnamon
"Steambox": AMD FX-6100, 8 GB, Geforce GTX 650Ti, LM 13 Mate
Ultrabook: Acer Timeline U, Intel i3, 4 GB, Intel HD 3000, LM 17 Cinnamon
Mediacenter: Intel NUC, LM 17 XFCE

Hi Thanks for the reply. I have actually solved this and neglected to update the thread.

I did reinstall mint after fitting the graphics card, this seemed the most logical solution for me.

My solution was to reinstall the drivers as per the linked thread, which worked. I think I missed the part about setting up 32 bit libraries first time around.

Is there proprietary drivers in the standard supplied with mint repositories?

Good you found a solution. There are proprietary drivers in the "standard supply" yes, just do as I wrote in the other post. Although they are usually not the newest ones though, so if one wants to have some more bleeding-edge drivers one has to add another PPA.
