Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by rozzer »

Hi all

I am a newbie and have recently installed Linux Mint 17.1 (Rebecca) still finding my way round with the help of many
of the obliging techs here at the forums.
I have the discs (2) for RTCW and would like to run them and play the game if possible. It used to play well on Windows
and it needed to run from one of the discs.
Before I attempt to install the game is there any advice I can get from you guys beforehand (I do have Wine installed)
which will assist me.

Thanks all

Regards

Rozzer

In my opinion it is easier to get games working by using PlayOnLinux (which is a front-end thing for Wine) than just Wine itself. I have also had more luck using the newest version of Wine, instead of 1.6.2 or whatever the stable version is now.
I'm having trouble installing games that are on more than one disc though...

Yeah, the easiest way would be to use PlayOnLinux as Rozzer mentioned.
The native installer isn't very hard to use and works fine in Mint, but PlayOnLinux uses Wine and its more like a Windows installation.
If you have a decent laptop or desktop, it should run just fine.

Here is a guide for native binaries in Linux: RTCW
Here is the installer wolf-linux-1.4-full.x86.run

Let us know if you need help with the Native installer or PlayOnLinux

Hi Ryvius & Booman

Thanks for replying and your help.
I tried to install Wolfenstein (no RTWC displayed) using PlayonLinux (version 4.2.2) but it failed, I then tried to load the game with the disc's, which I have, but that failed too. Difficult to recall all the reasons for failure and there was a few things either missing not installed or incomplete, so many things were updated I lost track, I virtually used all my airtime and still nothing.
I then thought I would try to to install the game RAGE using PlayonLinux but during the installation I needed to install STEAM and the installed version is (1.0.0.47) but the latest version is (1:1.0.0.45)
Do I have to have STEAM and if so why?
Do I have to register in order to play the games I want to download via PlayonLinux,?
I do not want to play online. The games are for my own amusement.

After all this I do not have RAGE installed anywhere except a Folder in PlayonLinux's virtual drives, do I now have to re-download the game (I looked in Synaptic Manager and there is no reference to RAGE)

Totally baffled

Thanks all for your help (I will master Linux one day I promise) :?

I did not realize you had the old CD ROM version of Wolfenstein. If I remember correctly it only has one disk and you can still play without it in the drive.
Make sure to update your PlayOnLinux because the most recent version is 4.2.6
Also, use the Wine Manager (under tools) to download the stable 1.6.2 version of Wine
Its the best Wine to use with older games.
Then try installing it again.

There is a step-by-step guide for Rage here: GamersOnLinux.com
The guide shows you how to download newer versions of Wine
I recommend Wine 1.7.40 because it allows the In-Game Community Overlay.
Older versions will crash games because of this overlay

Yes, Steam is required for Rage to play. It sucks because I love the old-days where you can install from a Disk and then play as much as you want, but these days Steam is the DRM for most games. It runs GREAT in PlayOnLinux and you won't need the CD ROM/DVD in the drive to play.

Hi Booman

The old CD version I have is a 2 disc set-up and I need to install both and then install one to play, but that option is now out I think.

I managed to update the Wine version to '1:1.6.2-0ubuntu4' using Synaptic Package Manager
I tried to update the playonlinux version from 4.2.2-1 the same way but it doesn't update so I downloaded the latest version 'PlayOnLinux_4.2.6.tar.gz' to the desktop and extracted the contents
when I open the contents I see a selection of folders and files, one being the PlayOnLinux .exe. But I didn't try it or do anything else until I get your advice because I'm sure it needs to update to the original version I assume!!!

I'm sure STEAM and all the issues with games and indeed other Linux issues will eventually all be ironed out and it will be a truly great O/S
I really do appreciate your help and hope it helps others too.

Kind regards

P.S great informative guides you have made

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

don't worry about Synaptics right now.
Since you have Ubuntu, download this version of PlayOnLinux: PlayOnLinux4.2.6.deb
All you have to do is double-click the .deb file and let the software installer do the rest.
You will have to click install and wait for it to do the installation.
Thats all

Once you run PlayOnLinux after that, click Tools, then click Wine Manager
This is where you can download other versions of Wine
Always try the newest version first.
Stable 1.6.2 is really good as well.

As for 2 disk games:
1. Create a folder on the desktop
2. Insert Disk 1
3. Copy all of the data from Disk 1 to the new folder on your desktop
4. Eject Disk 1
5. insert disk 2
6. Copy all of the data from Disk 2 to the new folder on your desktop
6. Eject Disk 2

Now do the PlayOnLinux installation but click "browse" and navigate to the folder on your desktop
Install the game from there

when its done, you should be able to play without the Disk in the drive

Hi Booman

Thanks for your time, however things are going from bad to worse and I am really getting
despondent even though I said I would try, It seems every move I make requires an update
a change another operation etc etc.
I loaded the discs for RTCW by using my wife's laptop and copied to a flashdrive (as I think my CD/DVD my be playing up)
to a folder on my desktop and went to PlayonLinux and commenced with the installation, part way through
the disc 1and after adding my serial number it says to insert disc 2, I cannot access disc 2 as the screen is a full screen of the first operation and I cannot reduce or minimize it to get to disc 2 so I eventually aborted the attempt. I tried to load on my wife’s Windows 8 and it completed in
15minutes and operational, It's just that she doesn't want it on her computer otherwise I would use it there :(
I decided to cut my losses and try again with RAGE, I downloaded PlayOnLinux4.2.6.deb and completed the
installation and went through the process again to download RAGE, after about 45 minutes I get the following errors :-
'error in POL_shortcut'.........'Binary not found exe'.......'have you installed the program to the default location'
'error in POL_Wine'.........'Wine seems to have crashed'...........'If your programme is running just ignore this message'

Any help or advice would be gratefully received

Kind regards Rozzer

Sorry its being difficult
There is a bit of learning curve running games in Linux, specially games that are made for Windows only.
Once you get the hang of it, most game are pretty easy.
I'm glad you were able to install PlayOnLinux
Did you try downloading a Wine version through Wine Manager?

There is a Rage Guide here on GamersOnLinux

I have a feeling those errors are because you are using a 64-bit Linux distribution and are missing the 32-bit libraries.
since you are in Ubuntu, use the synaptics package manager to look for multiarch or multi-arch, or ia32-libs.
Ubuntu has removed the ia32-libs packages, but there is still a way to install them in Ubuntu 14.

Try opening the Terminal: Ctrl+Alt+T

Type:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
Press enter
Enter password

Type:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
Press enter

Type:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386
Press enter

Type:

Code: Select all

sudo ./adb
Press enter

If everything installs properly, close the terminal
Restart Ubuntu and try Rage again.

Hi Booman

Thanks for your quick reply and help
I have 2 installed versions in Wine Manager '1.7.25' & '1.4'
I have not tried to downloading from there, these were already there.

This is the results from the terminal entries you gave me but the last one, ' sudo: ./adb: command not found'

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by Booman »

I'm so stupid! You can just use the synaptics package manager and search for: ia32-libs
I don't know why I thought you were using Ubuntu... we are in a Mint forum....

Those versions of Wine should be fine
I would download 1.6.2 because its the current stable
Wine 1.7.40 is really good as well
rozzer

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by rozzer »

Hi Booman

In my installed versions in Wine Manager are :-
1.4.....1.7.25 are installed and both of these are in bold
1.5.21......1.6.2........1.7.40 are now installed also but greyed out.

Synaptics package manager has the :-
(Package) Pimus-libs-ia32.......(Latest Version) 0-20131127-2........(Description) Shared Libraries for primus (32bit)

Once again I didn't download until I hear from you.

Thanks a Million for all your help and I certainly think you are being a bit harsh on yourself with your remark (I wish I had a fraction of
your knowledge)

Kind regards

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by Booman »

Perfect...
Greyed-out is fine, you can still use them.

I will have to research those Priumus ia32-libs
Those are probably the right libraries, but I need to know for sure.
If you feel "daring" go ahead and try to install them.

Do you have to video chips?
Intel HD and Nvidia for example?
Booman

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by Booman »

well that was quick, I found my answer from a google search: Primus ia32-libs
Those ARE the right 32-bit libraries for your setup.
Mint 17 is recognizing that you have two video chip on your computer.
This may cause some headache with games because you want the fastest chip to run your games.
Go ahead and download/install with synaptics

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by rozzer »

Hi Booman

Thanks,
I have installed 'primus-libs-ia32'........... 'shared libraries for primus (32-bit)' &
'primus-libs'.............'shared libraries for primus' installed as well, so I assume they are
necessary and must accompany one another, they installed with no problem.

I will be away from my pc for a few days now so I will try and install when I return.

Once again let me say how much I appreciate your time and effort.
I have learnt a few things and I hope others have too.

Best regards

Great, no problem!
My goal it to help and teach.
The more comfortable you are with Linux and gaming, the more you can trouble-shoot things on your own.

When you get back, lets start over with the steps I mentioned previously.
Copying all the Disks to a folder on the desktop, then installing with PlayOnLinux.

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by rozzer »

Hi Booman
I needed that break but am back now for more tuition :)

I will explain again with my discs quickly.
I can't run the game from the disc as it gives me errors.
I did as you said and copied the 2 discs to a folder and tried
to run the first disc, entered the serial number and not long after
it says to load disc 2............That's where I came unstuck as my
game covers the whole screen and I am unable to minimize or reduce
the screen to access the other disc in the folder on the desktop.
That is where I left it !!.
Also I Found that in my Driver Manager the following :- do you recommend me changing, as last
time I tried to get the recommended one I had to reload all sorts of stuff again, so I I reverted back to this one again.

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by Booman »

did you copy both disks to a single folder on your desktop?
I'm asking because if it you did, then it won't ask for the 2nd disk when installing.

Try the Nvidia 331 (recommended) drivers
rozzer

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Post by rozzer »

Hi Booman

I copied the first one and installed it in a new folder and then copied the second one
and installed into the same folder and I get
wolf****1 & wolf****2
When I go to the first one and select launch it tells me to install and asks for my registration number,
accepts it then tells me to get disc 2 to continue the installation......i can't get to disc 2 i.e. wolf****2
because the screen won't reduce to access the folder.
I did try another option during and tried to copy everything to one package but as some files are
labeled the same in each disc it asks if i want to replace the other file, out of curiousity i did it but it
unable to locate xxxx file or whatever.
I then tried to load partially from the copied disc in the folder and when it asked for the second i tried to
run it from the cd/dvd but it cannot locate some library.
I tried to find a way to reduce the game screen but it appears I’m not able to do that.
I wonder if there is a way to do it using a flash drive?

I will try to change the drivers again later

Thanks a million

Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein

PlayOnLinux has always had problems with multiple disks installations.
When you tried to copy both disks to one single folder, it should ask if you want to "replace" or "merge"
Click "merge"
Some files will have to be "merge" but it should combine all the pak files which have the game data
The other files like icons, autorun, etc can be "replace"

Let me know if this helps.
I have done it many times with game like Far Cry, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty and more
So it definitely works when copying all the disks to one folder on the desktop.
Just take a bit of trial-n-error
