I'm not very knowledgeable (phew, what a word ) in the legal part of this, what I plan to do, if possible is use some of the best skins I can find around for various programs and adapt them to the look and feel for Linux Mint.
What I want to know is what about copyrights / legal issues? I am talking about skins and themes freely available for download from the web.... do I need to credit the author, do I need to ask for permission etc etc...?

I definitely would credit the authors, but most themes from my knowledge are open source and free to distribute. Its just nice when the original creators get credit.

Ahhh, yeah I would think the readme file. Also probably even further when the distro is wrapped up an made maybe a accredation page as part of the distro help file. I think it starts up automatically when you first install mint.

It really depends on the license of the artwork. As done in the Ada release note I would be glad to credit the authors or at least give the name of the individual parts that were used for the theme.
