Both Pidgin and Skype are extremely popular, so new users will be happy to know that their Mint-desktop supports Skype out of box even without using appshop.
What about Opera, starting with 12.0 release it supports hiding titlebar like on Windows so it gives more space for browsing
Install Opera, Pidgin with pidgin-skype by the default
