Reduce minimum word length for forum search

Post by Brucey99 »

Hi

I commonly try to use the forum search but it always requires me to search a mimimum of 5 characters. I think this is too restrictive and means most my searches have not worked. For example I'm trying to see any relevant posts about my laptop

Code: Select all

Dell XPS 15z Mint 14
As you can see none of those words have 5 letters or more so I can't find any results.

I understand this is to stop common words being shown in results. However, to my knowledge phpbb3 has a feature called 'Common word threshold' which you can set to ignore common words being shown.

Enable people to search better should also reduce the risk of creating duplicate topics

I'd suggest a min word length of 3, on the off chance an admin reads this :D

That's irrelevant. 'Use google' is the only answer you're going to get, apart from 'Put up with it'.

It's a very simple change in settings, you never know, an Admin might read it

Hi brucey99

One of the mods explained the forum search situation a couple of weeks ago:

I do think a note would be helpful when it tells you your search is too short, to use the site: method in google.

I have a slightly better suggestion although it is based on Google Custom search. Below are links of custom search engines that help in searching linux related topics. You could search here and even filter for Mint.

I have them bookmarked.

It would probably be best to disable the site search and integrate google seach results into the forum itself

The main phpbb3 site does this: https://www.phpbb.com/search/?q=google+search
