We have to wait and see how things develop for 0904, but it is a valid suggestion.
The problems does not seem to be widespread though

Well, count me as one of the Mint 5 users that it does affect. I finally had to kill PulseAudio completely in order to keep my system from crashing. It's running stable and smooth now and sound is much cleaner (and louder...) running solely on ALSA. A fix would be good, would keep the sound issues from driving away new users.
