Would it be possible to include in the Linux Mint distributions something like the 'Symbola' UTF-8 font found on this site:
http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/?
It contains lots of symbols, glyphs and emoji that are currently going around in the smartphone and social networking world. People keep sending me e-mails and messages with characters like these:
http://apps.timwhitlock.info/emoji/tables/unicode,
which I can see on my phone but not on the desktop box. Providing a font like the Symbola mentioned above would help.

Re: Feature request: Symbols font
It's quite easy to install any ttf fonts you've downloaded.like the 'Symbola' UTF-8 font found on this site:
http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/?
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Fonts
Actually that makes it sound much more complicated than it is:
Put the font(s) in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/[optional-sub-dir]
then
Code: Select all
sudo fc-cache -f -v
http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/29
(except the ~/.fonts dir has been moved...)
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Interesting! On LMDE it is still there. Where is it now by default on the main edition?Flemur wrote: (except the ~/.fonts dir has been moved...)

Yes, I know. That's how I fond out about this font. Plus of course having to go spelunking the web to find it.It's quite easy to install any ttf fonts you've downloaded.
It should be in a nice and easy package. Plus, most desktop users take a dim view of spending time, having to type arcane terminal commands and jumping through all sorts of hoops to get something simple and essential (for them) as this.
