Instead of going the route pulling in that bloated Desktop KDE how about a lean flavor for older machines? I'd suggest Fluxbox as the Desktop manager, it's very fast, slick features and sexy. That would really broaden the user base also and recycle some old machines destined to pollute some land fill.
