Icons in task bar or on desktop

I would like to access the applications and system plus e mail and web brouser icons from the desktop or in the task bar like in the old Bea edition. I wonder if this could be an option on future editions of Lunux Mint? If this issue has already been addressed, please inform me of the decision and/or direct me to the post or discussion. Thank you.

You mean you want the regular gnome menu?
Right-click on panel (taskbar) -> Add to Panel - > Menu Bar under utilities
