Firefox 3.1 Beta 3

Postby piratesmack on Fri Mar 13, 2009 4:43 am

I have created a Debian package for Firefox 3.1 Beta 3
http://files.filefront.com/firefox+31b3 ... einfo.html

It is a repackaging of Mozilla's official binary tarball, that seemed like the best way to do it.

Here is the script I wrote to build this package, for anyone who wants to check the quality (Or build it themselves):
http://files.filefront.com/firefox+scri ... einfo.html

I ran some javascript benchmarks and Firefox 3.1 beta 3 is nearly TWICE as fast as the current stable release, so it's definitely worth the upgrade :D
I've been using it over here with no problems so far.

It is important that you remove your old Firefox before installing this:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove firefox firefox-3.0

If anyone has any other requests, send me a pm and I will build a Debian package for it (Or at least try to :) )

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

piratesmack,

I noticed you didn't --purge when you removed the existing Firefox install. Will the New beta pick up the existing .mozilla folder and use it along with the existing bookmarks it contains? Or should the user backup this folder first and remove it before installing the new beta, then reload the bookmarks from the old folder?

Thanks for your work. :-)

Hi, Fred.
I just left my ~/.mozilla directory and all my old addons and bookmarks seem to be working fine.

Doesn't --purge only remove configuration files in /etc? Or no? :?

Another thing:
The mplayer mozilla plugin gets removed when you uninstall Firefox.
So you might want to:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer

After installing the new package.

Good question. I don't know the answer to that. I know that for some programs the .configs are purged but I know it isn't universal, as it is for the /etc files. It may be only for a certain class of programs, ie KDE native as an example, that you get the .config purge. I just don't remember, sorry. :-)

Yeah, I have no idea.

I just kind of assumed that only /etc files got purged.
And since Firefox doesn't have any config files in /etc, I didn't --purge
