My wireless network card?

Postby toiletdude on Sun Oct 07, 2007 7:14 pm

Will my Wireless network card, a Linksys WPC54G, work with Linux Mint?

I heard from other websites and people that mintWifi might be able to help me...

Thanks,

Hello

I can't tell you exactly. What i CAN tell you is that my Linksys USB wlan adaptor seems to work. As for the question if your device works: just try the liveCD and you ll know.

In my (sometimes painful) experience, I found out that with my devices, nearly all distris failed concerning wlan, but mint made them work like a charm, without even the need to intervene.

(I use cassandra kde, btw).

So just pop in the live cd without installing it and see whether it works. Chances are good...

Hi,

My wife has that card in her laptop, and it works in PCLinuxOS, with help from ndiswrapper.

I think it has a Broadcom chip (I can check later if you like), so you may have problems here.

But like dracorX says, try the LiveCD first.

Hope this helps,

Cheers :) :)

Hmmm....
Thanks for your answers, guys! :)

I'll download the liveCD sometime this week.

With my experience using a Ubuntu/Xubuntu liveCD, my wireless card always failed. (then again, i have virtually no knowledge of Linux)

Thanks guys! I hope this works!:)

heh. I hope it works for me. :)
Only one question...
When it says LiveCD, do you have to burn it to a CD? Or can you burn it to a DVD? (i have a dvd drive in my laptop)

Hello. Depending on the ISO, best one is DVD edition... (else you have to install ooo from adept, depending on mint edition.

OOO is OpenOffice.Org ;-) the beloved office suite ;-)

link to open office
http://www.openoffice.org/
is afaik included with the dvd, or can be installed from repos if only loading light version of mint
(I only know for KDE editions)

Downloads to mint are of course here:

Does the KDE version come with the Mint tools?
(MintWifi, etc...)
Or do they have to be downloaded/installed seperately?

Thanks. (downloading now)

Well. It didn't work.
I popped in the LiveCD I had burned to a DVD (KDE edition) and tried it out.

After the loading screen, it booted up. And to my dissappointment all it gave me were errors.

Can anyone give me an idea as to the specs this distro requires?
My laptop's a quite old and has P3, 512 MB RAM...

Thanks

P3 + 512MB RAM should be fine.

You might want to be more precise about the error messages...

The error messages look similar to this:

[213.280000] hdc error code 0x70 sense-key 0x03 asc: 0x11 ascq: 0x00

The first number-code is wrong. and so are maybe some of the other numbers. (non-specific) they all appear pretty fast... And the numbers change constantly...

Thanks, sorry I couldn't be more specific.

dose it boot at all?
what is the last error message?

i have install Cassandra on a Armada E500 similar spec. worked great

try the cd on other computer if you can to see if the cd is defective
if that is the case burn it at a lower speed.

no, it doesn't boot at all. :(

I dont know the last error message... there are so many. I've let it run for a while aand it wont go through them all.
If you really need the last error message, i'll re-try it tonight when i get home from school.

I have the DVD burned at 4x... i dont think it would be the speed. (I have the option of burning it at 1x or 2x, should I try that?

Thanks.

Yes, definitely try a slower speed - my first Cassandra KDE DVD was burned at 4 x and didn't work. I had to go back and use a higher quality DVD and burn it at 2.4 x. No problems after that :)

Cheers,

Hugh

alright. it went through the booter to the loader (slider thing) and after that it just went black.

I tried it multiple times... every time it did this or went black before.

In my experience, older laptops (turn of the century) have trouble with ACPI power management, so you have to turn it off.

When the boot menu comes up, hit F6 for other options, and add 'ACPI=off' to the line of commands that appears at the bottom, then hit enter to carry on booting.

If that doesn't work I would try the 'Safe Graphics' option from the boot menu.

Other than that, hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will come along soon with better ideas.

Cheers :) :)
