[SOLVED] mintUpdate not wrkng despite correct prxy settings

Postby akshaypande1989 on Sat Oct 31, 2009 9:31 am

Dear all,

I am behind a university proxy and have had to configure proxy settings on all internet-based apps such as mozilla, konquerer, synaptic etc and of course in System Settings. I gave the exact same settings in mintUpdate (v 3.7.9.1). All the above mentioned applications function fine. But mintUpdate can still not connect to the internet. This has been prevelant since I installed my OS - Linux Mint Gloria KDE. The error I get is,

++ Launching mintUpdate in root mode
++ Starting refresh
++ Auto-refresh timer is going to sleep for 5 minutes, 0 hours and 0 days
-- Connection to the Internet failed (tried to ping http://www.google.com)
-- Connection to the Internet failed (tried to read http://www.google.com)

Please help

Warmly
Akshay

You could also use synaptic
mint menu>System>Package manager

Try it in a terminal, seeing if there is any additional information displayed..
In terminal, check
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade

For that proxy, you could use your network proxy and for other applications (browser, mintupdate), use system proxy
--the defaults you have configured in the network
mint menu>control center>Internet and network>Network proxy

Can synaptic do everything mintUpdate does? If yes, then it's OK. (Although one still had a sinking feeling that the OS is "imperfect")

On typing sudo apt-get update in Konsole I got

I couldn't find "Control Center" on the mintMenu. Did you mean "System Settings". There I have already configured the network proxy in "Network Settings" ---> Proxy

Yes, Kde4 changed the name from kcontrol to System Settings

When the update failed, there was no need to run the upgrade
--update simply refreshes the repository in /etc/apt/sources.list
and if lets say 3-5 fail to connect, I would simply break out of the command with Ctrl C (keyboard combination), to stop the connection attempts..
-- you have seen enough when it is not connecting, in fact even 1 or 2 should be enough to make a stop
ctrl C also stops ping if you don't use a -c (count option)
If you can ping an external IP address, but cannot ping a name (www.google.com etc), then your issue is a dns one, the name-IP mapping is not working, you would have to investigate that locally..

If the only thing that isn't working is the repository updates, then simply start fresh with a new list (/etc/apt/sources.list)
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.old
--or use your file manager to move

Then try the sudo apt-get update again

And apart from the OS updates, everything else does work,
you can ping
Code: Select all
http://www.google.com
--for example or other companies
like http://www.ibm.com
http://www.novell.com
http://www.microsoft.com
--take your pick

And netstat -rn in a terminal should show UG (gateway, the system proxy /router) and a list of IP address

Here are the ping results with http://www.google.com

ping http://www.google.com
Code: Select all
PING www.l.google.com (209.85.231.104) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- www.l.google.com ping statistics ---
93 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 92592ms

On pinging an IP address

ping 127.0.0.1
Code: Select all
PING 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.089 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.060 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.073 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=0.064 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=5 ttl=64 time=0.062 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=6 ttl=64 time=0.060 ms
64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=7 ttl=64 time=0.060 ms
^C
--- 127.0.0.1 ping statistics ---
7 packets transmitted, 7 received, 0% packet loss, time 5996ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.060/0.066/0.089/0.014 ms

So is it a DNS problem? How do I solve that?

Also I find that I have 2 network managers by default in my computer: 1) NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0.100 (accessible from the taskbar) and KDE's default 2) Network Management v0.1, using KDE 4.2.4 (with the N/M blue logo), which I find in my System Settings --> Network and Proxy. These two don't share network settings with each other. Could these be causing confusion? I have configured my wired network settings in both, but in the latter there is no place to type in the "Netmask", instead an extra text field "Prefix" where I don't know what to type. Should I uninstall one of these? I'll do that too and tell you the results

The problem according to your first post is mintupdate not the network, since all other network connections work, mozilla etc ?
--so how to explain why your ping to http://www.google.com doesn't respond; well the system/network admins at that University can block ping responses, although they usually don't, since they need it for simple testing for users

If Mozilla works, and you connect to google.com via mozilla, then there is
    a)No DNS problem
b)No network addressing problem (IP setup)
The two network sections you found, network applet and network manager under system settings are probably the same program, the applet just being a monitor for the system settings>KDE network manager
--which, nevertheless has reported problems with Mint 7 KDE version..
      ________________________________________________

Network settings/cards/interfaces or computers changed again ?
What happened to the first reply line ? I can't tell you much from that display
This is as far as I am taking this....
I am giving UP NOW, since you do not seem to not be sticking with one option, a specific configuration for testing

I would be choosing one or the other as your network manager, not both, since it seems fairly obvious that two applications trying to access one network; running at the same time will most likely cause some problem
--I would probably take out the kde one in system settings, again I don't know why/how you would have two installed that are running; are they both running

      In terminal, check
        ps -aux[/b]

        https://bugs.launchpad.net/kdenetwork/+bug/351628
Yes, I believe that Linux Mint 7 KDE version switched the KDE network manager (front end ? or the actual manager) for the Gnome network manager as a default
--after noting some issues with their KDE version (another Kde source might have been OK, who knows)

Prefix is the same as Netmask
        (255.255.xxx.xxx), whichever is your netmask

        In a terminal, check
          netstat -rn
Genmask, that is netmask, that is prefix, what is it in your system

Dear DrHu

Sorry for my late reply. I have actually been having multiple issues with Gloria KDE for the past 10 days, the most important being its choppiness. I later found out that my hardware was not good enough for KDE 4. Hence I've installed Linux 5 RTS (GNOME) fresh on that partition. It works beautifully and is quite clearly the right distro for my computer. I am certainly sticking with it. You must understand the great amount of confusion and panic I faced with regard to Linux: any solution required tweaking and installing packages, and simple things like apt-get, wget etc couldn't connect. I also messed up a lot of things, first a broken update to KDE 4.3 and then an unsuccessful downgrade to KDE 3.5.10. There were many problems and I was trying to solve all of them at once impatiently. On top of that KDE 4 was very sluggish on my hardware.

But the good news is that all of this give me useful experience with Linux, so no regrets.

There are still some networking problems and mintUpdate doesn't work in this too. Again the same problem, but I am quite sure this a proxy thing. I'll update this message and make it more descriptive, giving you ping test replies etc. Please bear with me till that time.

Warmly

There could be a very easy reason as to why mintUpdate is not working for you.
Go to Synaptic, then to Tools → Options (may be worded differently on your system due to translations etc.)
In Synaptic you need to set your proxy server, mintUpdate relies on Synaptic for its operations. If Synaptic can't connect,
neither can mintUpdate.
Another possible solution is to do the following in your terminal:
Code: Select all
set http_proxy env
export http_proxy=http://username:password@proxyserver.net:port/
export https_proxy=http://username:password@proxyserver.net:port/
export ftp_proxy=http://username:password@proxyserver.net:port/

Change it as needed, this should even allow the 'ping' command to operate now (you should save those commands in ~/.profile or ~/.bashrc)

Hope that solves it for you

Dear Ikey and DrHu

Problem solved!

In mintUpdate I went to Edit --> Preferences --> Update Method tab and in the Internet Check field I changed "google.com" with an IP address. Now mintUpdate connected to the internet instantly and showed me a wonderful list of pending updates.

But at the same time I think it weird that my network can ping IP addresses and not websites. But that doesn't bother me that much.

Thanks to all the people who helped me with this problem
