MintUpdate - Icon and freeze problems

I have some annoying MintUpdate bug.
In the end, MintUpdate works, but it is not as easy as it should be.

MintUpdate starts without errors at startup.
It displays correctly in the taskbar when there are no updates available (lock icon with checkbox).
It scans correctly to verify updates (lock icon flashing).
However, when it finds that there are updates available, the icons disappears !
Of course, I am not looking at that application all the time, so when I notice that it is missing from the taskbar, that means that updates are available.

Since it disappears, I need to open it from the System - Administration Menu.
The window opens white, then goes grey and usually it freezes for a long time.
I need to close it with Force Quit, as it is greyed out even after 15 minutes.
So I open it 2 or 3 times in a row.
Then it finally shows the list of the available updates (level 1, 2 and 3).
I select to apply them.
The download works correctly.
Then when the MintUpdate comes back from installation, it freezes again.
So I open it again 2 or 3 times in a row.
Then it finally shows that my system is up to date, and the lock with a checkbox now appears in the taskbar.

I like this application as it would be easy to see when updates are available and be sure to have the latest fixes and improvements.
But I would like it to work properly without that much problems.

Note: I use Linux Mint 6 (Felicia), which was updated from Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa).
Might that be why I would be "the only one" having this problem ?

I have not seen any report about this before. I have seen reports that icons disappear in a similar way for other applications
I think I give in immediately and ask for help

I think there might not be a good alternative to purging mintUpdate

NO - don't do this - far to many other packages will be removed!!
I should have checked before I wrote this answer - my bad
- purge mintUpdate (sudo aptitude purge mintUpdate)
- remove the folder /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate completely) or delete all contents
- reinstall mintUpdate
The mintUpdate history is preserved so it should remember what's installed

I didnt went thru the purge, because it seems to me that far too many packages would be removed

Note that it says that mint-meta-gnome mintupdate-gnome is BROKEN
Maybe there is a first alternative to remove all that ?

We should be able to test easily the fixes, since my icon doesnt show at the moment...

Open Synaptic and mark these two packages for reinstall (just type Mint in the search box to find them)
This might fix it
This reminds me that one can go to synaptic or apt-get and start the process of removal, but not carry it through to get info on dependencies and broken packages

I marked them both in synaptic, reinstalled only those 2 but they still show as BROKEN in purge.

How should I proceed next ?

At the bottom of each page of a post, there is a darker green line, just over the "Powered by phpBB © 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007 phpBB Group"
That line has 3 items, which says when you havent subscribed to the post: "Board index", "Subscribe topic" and "Bookmark topic"
And when you have subscribed to the post: "Board index", "Unsubscribe topic" and "Bookmark topic"

Any idea on how I can only uninstall the 2 BROKEN packages and reinstall them ?

I had the same issue. I could see updates waiting but the window was grayed out and I could not select anything. I could not find an answer so I just re-installed the OS.
Works for me. Mint update is working ok so far.

Damn it - I force myself to check my posts and still I manage to miss the install part of the command
I think apt install -f has a chance to fix your problem - note that no package name should be given - just apt install -f
This forces apt to (try to) fix broken packages

Might the other packages that purge want to delete be unused packages that where left there when I uninstalled other packages ?
I thought that Synaptic always remove the "children" packages if they where not used anymore by any "parent" packages...

No apt/Synaptic does not remove packages that are not in use
That's why there's the command apt autoremove

This removes
mint-meta-gnome
mint-meta-main
mintupdate-gnome
and nothing else (at least that's what it told me)
There is a difference between purge and remove - purge removes all config files and they can be shared among many applications
Then do apt install these packages again, begin with mint-meta-main

Installing mint-meta-main installs mintupdate.
So you installed mint-meta-main after the purge and then checked to see if mintupdate was purged.
This is how come it was installed.

I never ran all the steps of the purge,
only the analysis part of the purge, because it verifies the integrity of the installation.

I want Mint Update to be installed, but I also want it to work as intended.

You may have reinstalled from files on your hard disk and there's a corrupt file
So we restart

Just to be sure we get the latest
Now you have to empty the apt-get cache

apt clean

There is a difference between clean and autoclean - clean removes all packages, autoclean only those not used any more - from the apt-get cache, not the installed applications
Then remove and reinstall not quite as before

apt remove mintupdate-gnome

This removes the three packages - don't remove anything else
Now install the packages again

apt install mint-meta-main

This will fix the problem I hope
