TO SOLVE MINTUPDATE AND MINTUPDATE ICON FREEZES:

IN SYNAPTIC, REFRESH LIST, THEN MARK ALL AND UPDATE SYSTEM.

AFTER REBOOT, MINUPDATE WORKS FINE AGAIN AND THE ICON DOESN'T FREEZES AGAIN.

I thought one should not update through Synaptic but specifically through MintUpdate?

I'm quoting from page 45 of the LinuxMint pdf manual (emphasis mine):

-------------------------------------
"There are many ways to do this but only one of them is recommended.

You could use APT to upgrade all your packages with one simple command (“apt
upgrade”) or you could use Synaptic and click the “Mark All Upgrades” button but we
strongly recommend you don’t do that
. The reason is simply because these tools don’t
make any distinctions when it comes to applying updates and assume that you want all of
them.

Some parts of the system are safe to update and some others aren’t. For instance, by
updating your kernel (the part which is responsible among other things for hardware
recognition) you might break your sound support, your wireless card support or even
some applications such as VMWare or Virtualbox which are closely linked to the kernel.

Using mintUpdate

Linux Mint comes with a tool called MintUpdate. It gives more information about
updates and lets you define how far you want to go with applying them. It looks like a
lock and sits on the bottom-right corner of your screen.
-------------------------------------

Can someone categorically clarify whether we should update through MinUdpate only or also through Synaptic?

Thanks.

You should probably follow the advice in using mintUpdate since that is the safest procedure. If you are a more experienced Linux user, you can most likely fix any breakage that may occur by updating everything via Synaptic.

MINTUPDATE DOESN'T FUNCTION AFTER INSTALLATION (I AM USING PT-BR) THERE'S A BUG, THE ICON FREEZES AND THERE'S NO SOLUTION FOR THIS TILL NOW.

So the only way i've found to make mintupade function is that:

Once mintupdate icon freezes after installation it will only work again if you update system from synaptic, (there's not so much updates and no dangerous updates)

AFTER THAT YOU ONLY UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM FROM MINT UPADATE. (CAUSE NOW IT WILL WORK FINE AGAIN)

Hi,

Thanks for your tip.

93 updates done through Synaptic. - Now 4 updates. more
mintUpdate tried to get the updates but it failed. > force to quit.

When there are Updates to do mintUpdate does not work
When there are NO updates to do mintUpdate works.

Then i went back to (APT) or Synaptic and did the updates.

I see that 2 brazilians have already attended to this post as they're all having the same problem. I too can't see my updates when I start mintUpdate. I've just migrated to the Gloria gnome version just the day before yesterday, and everytime I run my mintupdate (as said above, it is automatically started on logon, and displayed on my system tray, seemingly working properly), it freezes in gray for as long as I don't force it to close.

I know there's a simple way to get updates from the Synaptic Manager, but there I have no access to prioritary updates rather than downloading a whole bunch of packages that might turn out to be useless (if not dangerous) to my system... So updating via Synaptic won't work for me :?

Is there any other way to fix it? I've tried reinstalling mintUpdate on my Synaptic Manager, but then when I opened it... all turned gray again!

Question: Could this issue be somehow related to the brazilian language, portuguese? Roberto, Fernando and I are all brazilians.

Vinicius,

Realy, the problem is related to portuguese language. No doubt, cause mintupdate works fine running system from the live cd and it only brokes after installation, when PT and PT-br translation packages are downloaded from internet at the end of the installation process. Till now no update to fix this bug.

I've already tried many ways to fix that but did not get sucess.

So, we keep waiting for an update to correct it. (the problem is that it only affects pt and pt-br languages)

Ok, so tracking this topic and waiting for the final fix will be it? I'm sorry I'm unfamiliar to that sort of problems, but don't we need to report it to the development team? So far I see no update for it on synaptic...

Also, I had an idea: couldn't we just have mintUpdate "downgraded" to its previous version? I did it to my amarok 2 (down to 1.4) and now it works just like I want it. I mean: what about uninstalling the gloria mintUpdate and replacing it with the felicia one?

Hi

Another bazilian here with the same problem.

I followed some instructions I found here in this forum (remove mint-meta-main and a few other packages and reinstall them) but it did not work. Don't mind trying.

The bug is exactly that: whenever there's an update to be done, mintupdate freezes. Using synaptics will make mintupdate work, only until another update is avaiable. So far, mintupdate is useless.

For those who really want to, my suggestion regarding security levels is to select all updates in synaptics, and unmark kernell ones. As I can't tell if any other update marked is levels 4 or 5, I just take my chances.

Anyone ever tried to reinstall the system to see if the problem is solved?

EDIT: fixed in v3.7.7, so you only need to run the synaptic workaround once more to be free of this bug. If one of you could maybe post an announcement-style message in the Portuguese forum, that'd be great: viewforum.php?f=72

Hi, all, sorry to see you've been having problems, but now the issue's confirmed, I created a bug report at viewtopic.php?f=165&t=27674&p=160660#p160660
I've also identified the problem, and posted the solution there, please try it out, and if it works post so here, rather than cluttering the bug report! Note that if mintUpdate is updated before this is fixed, you may have to run the series of commands again, so check the changelog if you see mintUpdate inside mintUpdate! But I'll also e-mail clem, to try to get this fixed asap.

Hey emorrp1, I'm glad we've got a fix already!

I've done the full update via synaptic, and I was able to get mintUpdate up and running again. It displayed only one of my available updates though (since I had installed the rest of them just before), wich was the Amarok 2. As I said, I have downgraded my Amarok to 1.4, and locked it for following updates on synaptic, but mintUpdates doesn't seem to be able to see that and tells me install it -- failing to do so.

Therefore, I can't actually say it works 100% fine, though it appears to be ok. As soon as I'm certain that I can safely use mintUpdate, be sure I'll post it on the portuguese forum.

Thanks for the quick answer!

Hi, glad it's (mostly) working. The version holding feature was originally planned for Gloria, but was postponed to Helena development cycle instead due to technical difficulties.

Hi emorrp1

Thank you very much.

I upgraded mintupdate to v. 3.7.7. So far so good. But there's no update left to be done. I'll have to wait a little bit to confirm the bug was solved.

emorrp1,

I've updated my system today via mintUpdate, and it all worked like a charm. I've already posted your solution to the Portuguese Forum instructing how to install it via Synaptic.

Thanks for the support,

Hi, your lucky you can get into synaptic. Since mintupdate updated itself yesterday to version 4.7.8, I have no access to synaptic at all. Any suggestion how I can fix this problem.. as mentioned, mintupdate updated itself from version 4.7.7 to 4.7.8 yesterday (20th June), and since then synaptic manager hasn't worked at all.. also the mintupdate manager itself takes a very long time (over an hour) to check for updates.

whoops made a bit of a blunder here.. I mean;t MINTSYSTEM upgraded to 7.4.8 ...on 19th, it was mintmenu that upgraded yesterday to 4.7.8. Eitherway, since mintupgrade ran yesterday synaptic isn't working.

Hopefully a patch/bug fix will be in the offering..

Hi - I see that the repo is up and running, and mintupdate is now responding (showing no updates), but alas the synaptic manager (which I use not for updating, but adding new software) is still not working.. It starts up, asks for admin. root password, and then immediately crashes.. it only started doing this after the update the other day. Is anyone else having problems with synaptic manager crashing now upon startup ? Any ideas how to fix it please ?

nope, mine is fine, please post this as a new support thread for synaptic, detailing the steps you took precisely, and if you can, try to replicate it in a virtual machine.

EDIT: sorry, didn't see your other post was connected, just another reason why you should stick to a single thread to solve it, rather than posting on unrelated threads.

Fixed it - it seems the Mintupdate corrupted the cache files for whatever reason.. If anyone else wants to know how I fixed it, try the following..

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin
