Could not download safety rules

Postby jerseygal on Sat Aug 08, 2009 1:17 pm

This is what I copied and pasted from the information window of mint update.

++ Launching mintUpdate in root mode
++ Starting refresh
++ Auto-refresh timer is going to sleep for 5 minutes, 0 hours and 0 days
-- Failed to download new safety rules: [Errno socket error] [Errno -2] Name or service not known None
-- Could not download safety rules

If anyone answers this, please understand that I am a COMPLETE newbie to this and only have the most basic understanding of terminology - maybe not even that! I did manage to take an old totally messed up computer that someone gave us (no valid operating system license for reinstall), and installed Linux Mint Glo and managed through trial and error to get it connected to our home wireless network. Don't ask me how I did it, though.

Hi, this may sound dumb . Image . but others have used this fix in the forum :

Close the mintUpdate icon in the taskbar (right-click -> close). Go to Menu -> Administration -> mintUpdate and start it from there, enter password, let it refresh.
Then it seems to auto-fix this . . . don't know why . . but it worked for them.

On reboot, the icon will be back in the tray.

Hope this helps, if not, post back, regards, Richy

I actually did search the forums and tried some of the things that seemed fairly simple. That was one of them, but I got the same response.

You've probably read this one . . I've got two posts with different things to try from a terminal . .

Copying and pasting from terminal....

jon-desktop jon # apt-get -y autoremove && aptitude -y autoclean && aptitude -y clean && dpkg --configure -a

Still the same. I was wondering if there is a way to "undo" the first update and then redo. Maybe it was fixed since then?

Thank you. I'm impressed with myself that I tried everything you suggested - in fact I'm more impressed with myself every day. Is that what Linux does for you?

OMG - this is a riot. Here's the fix (at least for me). In the mint update window, proxy tabs, I clicked on "manual" - didn't enter anything, clicked apply and it worked!

In the meantime, I have a network router that keeps dropping the connection so I have to run into the other room, unplug it, plug it back in, run back the the Linux computer and restart whatever I was doing. So sometimes I think there's a problem here, and it's actually the router.
