mintUpdate + openbox?? [solved]

Postby bluerabbit4210 on Sun Feb 07, 2010 1:58 am

Hi all. Recently upgraded to mint 8 kde, and I've been running an openbox session instead of the default kde session. What I can't figure out is how to launch mintUpdate directly to my notification area (like it does in the default kde/gnome sessions). if I add 'mintupdate' to my autostart.sh launches the gui (obviously), which I dont want. So far the solution(s) provided in this post haven't worked. Any suggestions?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Without looking for a solution I must say that Openbox is very stripped down and you simply might not be able to do lots of things you do in KDE/Gnome/XFCE/and even Fluxbox

Thanks for the reply. One of the things I like about openbox is that it's so stripped down. That also seems to be the source of most of my headaches! Maybe i'll give fb a try.

Ok, I've kept playing around with this. I keep looking at mintUpdate.py and it seems like there should be a way that I can manually launch it in user mode (with app_hidden == true), all while checking for updates in the background. I don't understand why running $ mintupdate.py automatically defaults to activate_icon_cb (line 1225)? a couple of cli arguments seem relevant, sys.argv[1] seems to control app_hidden, but there's only an if option for "show" (line 1598). Should there be an else clause? That still doesnt explain why it starts in user mode (as an icon) in kde and not in openbox. I'm not that experienced with python, but I know enough to get the gist of what's happening.
It looks like a few lines of code would make mintupdate useful across many different wm's? Maybe? What am I not getting here?

Thanks for your patience.

*edit: added line numbers. :)

Code: Select all
$/path/to/mintUpdate.py hide

works. Looks like anything could be passed as an argument that isnt "show".

mintUpdate or just Updater as it's called now works in gnome, kde, xfce and fluxbox no problems and I think even lxde as well
I'll take a note of this and see if we can do something about it in the future
