Update Manager hangs

When I open Update Manager it downloads the package information then it just hangs (with the mouse showing that the window is busy).

I just installed Mint 12 (coming from Ubuntu) 2 days ago. The update manager worked fine yesterday, but today it just hangs, even after a few reboots.

See if you get any errors when using in a terminal

apt update && apt upgrade

There may be some issue. To see any errors, please run the update from the command line instead. Open terminal and run:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Post any error output here for further advice.

I've run it a few times and sometimes I get the following result:

on opening a new terminal
ps -A shows:
18846 ? 00:00:08 synaptic <defunct>
24045 ? 00:00:08 synaptic <defunct>

and I don't seem to be able to kill either process.
