Pin-Priority: 1050
Step 3 : Downgrade Xorg Version

You can downgrade xorg with following code.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
You can use alternatively following code for downgrade.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install xorg xserver-xorg-input-all xserver-xorg-video-all
Step 4 : Now you can install Nvidia 17 or Nvidia 96 driver with following codes.

For Nvidia 173

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-173
For Nvidia 96

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-96
Now you can create xorg.conf file

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig
Step 5 : Install Nvidia Settings

You can install nvidia-settings as follows if you have problem from repo version.

For 32 Bit

Code: Select all

wget archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nvidia-settings/nvidia-settings_270.29-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i nvidia-settings*
For 64 Bit

Code: Select all

wget archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nvidia-settings/nvidia-settings_270.29-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

Took the exact same steps as described in tutorial, but after reboot, my screen is blank. Seems if resolution is not supported by monitor.
Someone knows how to fix this?
I'm new to Linux. Thanks!

If you want to reach desktop envoirement, open your system with revovery mode.
Select remount then root on the recovery menu.
Type following code for remove xorg.conf file.

Code: Select all

sudo rm -rf /etc/X11/xorg.conf
If your video card is Nvidia FX 5x00 series, you can try open source driver.

Aaron Plattner released new Nvidia 96 drivers this week which work perfectly with my GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x on Mint 13.

I'm very new at this but wanted to thank the originator. After some frustrating hours trying things which didn't work I was able to follow the instructions here and my wife's computer now boots into KDE perfectly and with no problems. A real shame the distro couldn't have detected and done this out of the gate but hey it works! The Gedit threw me for a loop as it wasn't installed but I managed to figure that out and everything else went pretty smooth. A few questions about updates came up and I believe I responded "Y". I can't pretend to understand all I watched on the terminal screen either. Mostly just Thank you and kudos.

This is my way to install 17x series on Mint 13 Mate.
Without any X downgrade.

---
GFX card: Nvidia FX 5200
Driver version: 173.14.36 Certified
Release Date: 2012.10.04
Operating System: Linux
Language: English (U.S.)
File Size: 21.6 MB
Added support for xserver ABI 13 (xorg-server 1.13).
---

First, just in case:
1. Backup your system.
2. Install "ppa-purge" from here:
https://launchpad.net/ppa-purge/

Now "nvidia stuff"..
This way works on almost every machine.

1. Make sure you have these packages on your system if you don't, then install it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-source
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
2. Download drivers for your GFX card from here:
http://www.nvidia.com
and save them to your /home directory.

3. Make downloaded file executable:

Code: Select all

$ sudo chmod a+x NVIDIA-here_version_number.run
4. Reboot

5. Go to "Recovery mode" - in Grub menu.

6. Go to "Root console" or "net console" - your filesystem must be mounted as R/W or use command:

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /
7. Open "blacklist" as admin:

Code: Select all

$ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
At end of file add this line and save it:

Code: Select all

blacklist nouveau
8. Remove the previous nvidia drivers and packages:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*
9. Block "Kernel Nouveau":

Code: Select all

$ echo options nouveau modeset=0 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf
$ update-initramfs -u
10. Reboot and go again to "Root console".
11. Change the mode to "init 3": (optional - may not work on every system - if not, go to next step)

Code: Select all

$ init 3
12. Install your downloaded driver:

Code: Select all

$ sudo sh NVIDIA-here_version_number.run
or:

Code: Select all

$ sudo ./NVIDIA-here_version_number.run
After installation finish, reboot again and you're done :)

If still your 3D don't work, edit file xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Find section:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nv"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection
and change them to something like this:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSection
Driver -> from "nv" to "nvidia"
Save, reboot and should works fine.

---
Maybe it will help someone.
I tried this method has repeatedly -> works.
Of course, there are also exceptions. I have once one card that don't want to work with this.

If that does not work, you can try to install drivers from this repos:

Code: Select all

ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
or

Code: Select all

ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
But I recommend caution and read about them in advance. These are the experimental repositories!

GreetZ!
eMcE.

This worked for me (Mint 13, MATE, GeForce FX Go5200) and is even simpler:

- If X started, then switch to the console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and sudo /etc/init.d/mdm stop (probably optional)
- sudo apt-get install nvidia-173-updates (this installs driver version 173.14.36)
- edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace "vesa" with "nvidia" in the Device section.
- reboot
