Newbie: using LM 13 Cinnamon 64-bit. Liked it very much so far. Saw this piece about installing the gnome shell, and gave it a try. Step 1 went fine (did not show any errors. Step 2 reported 404 when it tried looking for maya in the distros:

I checked the website at the address http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/gn ... ntu/dists/ there is no dir named maya. Don't know how to proceed further? Thanks for any help.

Looks like Mint's bad habit of renaming repo urls in play.

Open a root Nautilus ("sudo nautilus" in terminal), navigate to /etc/apt/sources.list.d - find the webupd8 .list file, open it and change all instances of "maya" within the file to "precise". Save. "sudo apt-get update", see what happens.

apt is looking for: http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/gn ... ce/Sources

but its name is: http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/gn ... ce/Sources

@bimsebasse: Thank you very much for the help... changing maya to precise in the sources file did it for me. :)

Is it possible to switch the login screen back from the gnome one after you install it? I like the old one I had better but I don't know how to go back to it.

Can't remember but I think Gnome Shell will insist on GDM over MDM.

You may be able to, but IIRC, at least when MDM first came out, it and GDM wanted to overwrite a file, so you couldn't switch between the two easily.

Thank you
From someone who tried I ended up messing up my Mate installation. Rather install the Cinnamon edition and then install Gnome Shell. Much easier and seems to work quite well
It works just fine in Mate 14.1 I suspect you did not install it correctly, this is the steps i did and its working 100%.
In Terminal type the following :
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell gnome-session gnome-tweak-tool
IMPORTANT :
Once you get to the install options where it asks if you want to use MDM or GDM you MUST choose GDM. ( i suspect you chose MDM, i did first time and it screwed everything up, second time i chose GDM and its all working )

After its installed, log out. You will probly get some display error message that pops up, ignore this, shutdown your PC manualy from on/off switch, start PC again, now you will get correct login screen, choose gnome in sessions and all will work fine :)

Now you can go to gnome extensions website ( https://extensions.gnome.org ) and install the extensions. Recommended extensions to install :
  • Advanced Settings in UserMenu ( this will let you open Gnome Tweak Tool from usermenu, this is very handy )
BackSlide ( This is a wallpaper changer that you can customise and set to change wallpapers you choose at set times )
Bolt ( this is an AWESOME menu for Gnome, it kinda is a mix between the old gnome2 menu and gnome3 menu, this is a MUST have )
Coverflow Alt-Tab ( this makes ALT-TAB between apps look 3D, its quite cool )
Extension Shortcuts ( this adds a little icon on your top bar that has some usefull shortcuts )
Panel Settings ( this is VERY useful extension, it lets you customise your top bar, move it to bottom, autohide etc etc )
TaskBar ( this is a MUST have extension, it shows a windowslist in the top bar, basicly shows all running apps, and it adds a nice preview feature )
TopIcons ( this extension puts your normal icons like pidgin and system updates in the top bar, also a must have )
User Themes ( this extension lets you customise your window borders, icon sets, controls and so forth ( this you do in gnome tweak tools ), it also lets you install themes )

there is hundreds more extensions to choose from, the ones above are just some of the "must have" section, rest you can try as you wish. Anyway, hope this was helpful to guys wanting to try Gnome3.

One other thing, the default Gnome3 does not come with a built in Terminal, so just grab Terminal from the software manager and you will be all set :)

here is a little vid clip of my Gnome3 running on Mate Edition 14.1 : http://youtu.be/PG567W2OMQk

set quality to HD to get nice full effects in fullscreen.

HEY this sounds awesome. I am having trouble with the Print Screen feature in Cinnamon... it is sorely lacking and no where near the capability of Ubuntu and Windows. If I install the gnome-shell.... do I have to LOGIN at the login screen in order to use print screen properly?.... or will it just work on both Cinnamon login and gnome login?

To describe the problem I'm having (which is what everyone else is having, even you) when I hit "Print Screen" it opens some kind of software to cause the "flash" and "snapshot" sound... this causes certain sub-windows to close and print-screen is rendered pathetic. Go to a Google Search on Chrome and type something to allow the "terms" to pop up below your search bar.. then hit the print screen button and that term list disappears.. then a picture is captured.
