I see a lot of people here do not use the bbcode functions when making links.
To me this is somewhat frustrating, as I'm used to make my links a little more informative.

Example: if I were to link to a post or to a external site, I copy or write some text: Go to the Ubuntu site for more info, my text is the link. Not just http://start.ubuntu.com/8.04/ or to a post in this forum: Read this info to solve your problem. and not http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=3969

If you use Firefox, there is a great add on, BBCodeXtra.



Or you can use the built in feature in the forum.



Maybe this is just me, as I have used this add on for a long time.

I just figured out how to use the "quote" function. And I forget to do that from time to time.

Give me time, I'll get there. I am just a slow learner. Old dogs, new tricks, and stuff like that.

Thanks. Got it and it works well. What happens when the reader wants to copy the past say to a Tomboy note for future use or a how to? It looks like the reader needs to know that they must hover over each embedded link, right-click, and then select copy each link location. That is a rather ... insert the your word(s) of choice here ... type of feature that isn't necessarily be a welcome side affect. Having said that, is there a way to view all the links/copy all the links and avoid the extra steps when coping the whole post (with url information)?

It is a nice add-on and as you say it makes the post look nice as well, and saves space.

I use Glipper to remember and manage my clipbook, so I can copy a lot of stuff before I paste. Saves a little time when I'm answering forums.

Hum, maybe I wasn't clear. That happens. How can the reader select the text in the post and paste it to his Tomboy notes and have the links that are added with bbcode as - e.g. text that links to a website or forum post come along and be useful at a later date / on another computer? Do they need bbcode add-on installed?
Sorry if I'm not making since. Here's an example of something that I do when I find that forum answer/link that I really want to keep and not make a bookmark for in FF. I'll copy the post and put that in a notebook or Oo Doc for long term storage. Using the bbcode extension to make links to words in the post doesn't appear to copy the link.

//edit// links are preserved in open office but not in Tomboy or text editor. To get the actual source the copy must be done highlighting the post and then rihgt-clicking to "view source selection" and then copying the selection(s) from the pop-up window, and finally pasting. I can work with that.

Point to the link text, right click, copy link.

Yup you are right and already said in the previous post here. I used it again. And you get to do that procedure, one link at a time for every link in a post. If you want copy the whole post and its multiple links, and then past in a text editor that method is slow. Using the view source method gets them all. That's all folks

Well you could always press the "quote" button and get everything spelled out at once for you...

Well - nicer but it would probably cost me the time to answer a question or two

I wondered how it might affect moderating. More specifically, how newbies coming from windows and not used to forums (as yous truly was a little more than a year ago - sometimes that's more obvious than others) as a knowledge base to ask question ... and actually get help ... etc. would use the add on.
