How-To build rt2860 WLAN-module for eeepc

Hello,
it's just a little bit different from the way we go for debian sid.

First: Download the rt2860-source package you find in the sid repos.
For mirrors see this page: http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/rt28 ... e/download
Install it by typing "sudo dpkg -i rt2860-source*" in console.

Second step: Stay in console and type "sudo apt-get install debhelper" which will install the package "debhelper" (really!).
Second and a half: Not worth a third step, but necessary: Type - surely still in console - "sudo apt-get install module-assistant" to get m-a.

Third step: Type these commands in console:
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i rt2860
This should end without an error.
To test the module, type (in console..): "sudo modprobe rt2860sta"
You got WLAN? Yes! :P

To enable the module each start, type (you know where!): "sudo gedit /etc/modules"
Add the modules name at the bottom of the file, in a new, single line. Like this:

i-was-here-before
me-too
im-a-module
rt2860sta

Done!

(This was tested on Mint 6)

just to let you know:
as seen in the changelog of the first RC of kernel 2.6.29, the rt2860 (same with rt2870) module will be build-in. ;)

Hello,

sorry, but I got no WLAN with it on my MSI Wind U100 and Linux Mint 7 Gloria (Kernel 2.6.28-11 generic). I also tried it with the windows-drivers rt2860.inf in version 1.01.03.000 (19.05.08), 1.02.01.000 (03.11.08) and 1.04.02.000 (24.03.09), but without any success. Any idea, how I can get WLAN?

Actually there are Linux drivers on the RaLink site. I stumbled upon them yesterday night. http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Linux.html I've not been successful in doing anhything with them. Actually I find them quite confusing. They actaully *want* you to read the code becaue they tell you how to edit some of the variables in the code but when you find the spots the indicate, they are already edited as they are supposed to be.

As I say, it was very late (or early) last night and I was tired so I should havve a go at the code and see if there ar linux binaries burried in there somewhere. These are not packaged for any distro in particular. Thiis is bare bones Unix/Linux stuff.
