My laptop comes with an Atheros AR5BXB63 card. Felicia auto-installs the correct madwifi driver but not the correct hal.

A new HAL has been made available by Sam Leffler (0.10.5.6) that supports AR2425 chips (AR5007* chipsets). This is a full HAL release so it should work for all platforms - that means x86-64.

Would be nice if this hal comes into Felicia soon.

Well Felicia is released and as such will not be changed (unless we discover a really serious problem) but to have it in the repos would be nice - I'll see what I can do - but a new hal may be a bit....
