How To: Install Western Q3 + Teamspeak

Postby acorn22 on Sat Apr 21, 2007 3:27 pm

Here at Linux Mint we play alot of Western Quake (those who frequent the irc channel at least) and this is a simple guide to get you playing too.

EDIT:
d00p has added a teamspeak server. So I have added instructions to use it ;)

EDIT:
clem added this game to the repos, added that :)

==Repo Install==

You can try to install this game via apt-get.

In a terminal type:
Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install open-arena-western

If you get an error saying no package was found, read Manual Install.

If that worked, skip down to ">>To Play Us" To run the game, look in your mint menu. It's in there.

==Manual nstalling==

First, you will need to download a few files:
1. Open arena (click here) openarena
2. Western Quake Mod (click here)

That will take a while. While we're waiting you need to install a dependency.

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libopenal0a

Once the downloading is complete you will need to extract both downloads someplace nice, like your desktop.

Open Arena(if you have romeo, skip this step)
You will have an installer file (.run) on your desktop. Right click on it and select "properties" then select the "permissions" tab then check "Allow execution as a program". Close the window.

Double click the .run file and follow the on screen instructions. If it asks for an installation location MAKE SURE that is is set to
Code: Select all
/home/your username here/Open_Arena
and the binary directory is set to your home folder.

Western Mod
When you extracted the tar.gz file you received a folder called "westernq3". To install the mod, simply move that folder into your Open_Arena folder.

==Post Installation==

To run Open Arena, double click on one of the following inside your Open_Arena folder:

ioquake3.i386 = Try this first. It is designed for single-core 32 bit machines. If it does not work try the rest
ioquake3.x86_64 = This one is for single-core 64 bit machines (some AMD processors)
ioquake3-smp.i386 = This one is for dual-core 32 bit processors (Core duos, etc)
ioquake3-smp.x86_64 = This one is for dual-core 64 bit computers. Nice.

If is still won't run open a terminal and type
Code: Select all
$ cd ~/Open_Arena
$ ./ioquake3.i386

and post the output in this thread.

Now that you are able to open Open Arena, you will want to load the mod. Simply click "Mods" and "Westernq3" and "load". This can become cumbersome, so I have found an easier method.

Launcher
Right click your desktop or bottom panel. Click "add to panel" then " Custom Application Launcher". Make sure "application" is selected, and enter a name for the launcher like "Western Quake". Under command paste this:
Code: Select all
(only put aoss in front if you are planning on using teamspeak) aoss /home/your username here/Open_Arena/ioquake3.i386 +set fs_game westernq3
(make sure "ioquake3.1386" is the correct one you need to start the game. You may need "ioquake3-smp.i386" for example).
Now open your home folder and navigate into your Open_Arena folder. you will see your "westernq3" folder. Open it and find the file called "wq3b2b.ico". Drag that icon onto where it says "No Icon" in the custom launcher pane. Click close. Now double click on the launcher and you are in the game!

>>To Play Us you can join our server. To do this simply hit the ~ (tilda) key and type "/connect linuxmint.com". This will connect you directly to our server. *note* If it tells you the server is for low pings, try it over and over. To do this quickly simply hit ~ then the up arrow (like in the terminal) and hit enter. This will run whatever your last command was again. (in our case the last command was connecting you to our server)

Make sure you join us on irc and tell us your playing so we might join you!
irc.spotchat.org #linuxmint or just open xchat if your using mint!

Have Fun!

ps- Before you play you might want to check out the controls in the in-game preferences menu, so you know how do do everything. For example make sure "Alt Fire" is set to your right mouse button :)

ADDED:
==Teamspeak==

TeamSpeak is a program that allows you to talk to other people over the Internet. (like skype)

Installation
Installing Teamspeak is very simple. First this to do is download teamspeak from this website.

Next, extract the files to your desktop, and double click setup.sh and hit next a bunch.

Teamspeak is installed :)

Using Teamspeak
This is where it might get messy. First thing to do is get a couple of programs.
Code: Select all
 $ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer
$ sudo apt-get install alsa-oss

Then run Alsamixer via MintMenu>sound and video>alsa mixer and turn up the volume for everything (not all the way!) and make sure nothing is muted. Make sure "Mic boost" is checked. You can play with the sliders to get it optimized. Open audio recorder (Menu>sound and video>audio record) and test it to make sure you can hear yourself. Or just turn every slider up and blow on the mic. Don't blow your ears out!

Now that your mic is working you will want to talk on teamspeak. to start teamspeak type in a terminal:
Code: Select all
aoss /home/your username here/TeamSpeak2RC2/TeamSpeak
*note* you need the aoss in front to run it when you launch Open Arena. You can make a launcher using the method above. (there is also a nice Icon in there ready to use!)

MAKE SURE you put "aoss" in front of BOTH commands. (The one for quake/open arena AND the one for teamspeak)

Join Us!
To Talk to us open TS (teamspeak) and click "Quick Connect" Enter your desired nickname and server name. Ours is "linuxmint.com:8767". Leave the last two fields blank for now. Hit Join. Once you're in in the menu bar click "self" and click register with server. Enter your desired information. Next time you log on enter it in the quick connect box and you'll get more privileges!

Western Quake Mod ( click here)
http://www.3ddownloads.com/Action/Quake%203/Mods/Western%20Quake3/wq3_b22_full.zip
Rather I never got past the page you end up in when clicking the link
But I did get it from the Romeo repo :)

All you had to do was click "Start Downloading".

So I thought, but then I got to a page with links to demos, arenas and more, not knowing what to choose if anything...
