How To: Rip Music CDs to MP3 Format Using Sound Juicer

Postby zephyrus54 on Thu May 10, 2007 12:38 am

Directions For Cassandra

Install the following packages:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

Set up Sound Juicer:

Open up Sound Juicer-->Edit-->Preferences-->Output Format-->CD Quality, MP3 (MP3 audio)

Directions for Bianca

It seems as though Bianca doesn't automatically create a profile for MP3 audio, so you'll have to create one manually:

1) Follow the directions for Cassandra, but when it comes to setting up Sound Juicer navigate to Edit-->Preferences-->Edit Profiles

2) Select “Newâ€￾, enter a name of your choice, and press “Createâ€￾

3) Select your new profile from the list and click “Editâ€￾

*Note: I noticed a weird bug while going through the following steps...here's the fix:

While attempting to edit your profile you may find that you are unable to select or type anything into the text fields. To rectify this try closing the previous window labeled “Edit GNOME Audio Profilesâ€￾ and then your current window should now be active.

4) Under Gstreamer pipeline enter the following:

audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc mode=0 vbr-quality=6 ! id3v2mux

5) Under File extension enter:

mp3

6) Check the box labeled "Active?"

7) Restart Sound Juicer, and make sure to select the new profile you just created.

Dear zephyrus54

Sorry but it didn't work for me.... I look forward to it working because it is a pain to use audacity as a second step to get mp3 files.

Regards
John

Hey John,

What exactly isn't working for you?

BTW I tested this out using Cassandra Beta. Let me know if you're using Bianca, because there might be an extra configuration step.

You can also rip to MP3 with Kaudiocreator, make sure you have lame installed and select lame as the engine in Kaudiocreator.

I was trying to do this in Bianca, but without success. Indeed the mp3 option was not listed in the drop down box. Your instructions did the job; well set out and clear.

I followed your Bianca How To and it worked well.

Thank you for this as it will be a time saver for me.

Regards
John

Ripping to MP3

Postby sonofmoog on Wed Sep 26, 2007 5:35 pm

I used Synaptic to install the missing Gstreamer plugins, and setting up Sound Juicer in Cassandra was a piece of cake. Much obliged.

I go to Synaptic and install "Ubuntu Restricted Extras", then go to Sound Juicer-->Edit-->Preferences-->Output Format-->CD Quality, MP3 (MP3 audio). You're done! :D

I'd like to know what bitrate it rips at as it doesn't tell you and offers no option to change it

Try Asunder instead, you can select from 65-245 bitrate.
